...Gates was extending the tour-of-duty for active personnel.
Quote:
Active-duty soldiers will now serve 15 months in Iraq and Afghanistan instead of 12, an extension that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates portrayed as needed to maintain predictable troop levels, but it came as another painful sacrifice for the volunteer U.S. Army.

I'm not arguing that it shouldn't have been done, since it's a moot point. It's an Executive Branch privilidge and I'm not a whiny cnut like all you Pubbies. What it did spark was curiousity about a certain spin on the subject.
Quote:
A Republican U.S. senator is calling for a return of the military draft so the cost of the Iraq operation could be borne by people of all economic strata.

Speaking at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on post-occupation Iraq, Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., said, "There's not an American ... that doesn't understand what we are engaged in today and what the prospects are for the future."
Apparently there are some wacky folks out there that think that re-instating the draft would force an end to the war(not Hagel). I heard talk of it this morning on my morning zoo, but it was an intriguing thought:If everyone's kid got drafted, would people become more upset? Would there be a greater push to end it? Thoughts? Do any of you think that's viable?

Certainly the sacrifice these families have had to make is heroic, and I don't know that we would all hold up that well.

Perhaps I'm hallucinating, but haven't we discussed this about 100 times and come to a consensus that since it has .0000000000000000000000000000000000001% of ever passing that it wasn't worth worrying about?

Dig your panties out, Smash. I'm speaking in hypotheticals. I'm intrigued by the particular line of reason. Of course the draft hasn't a chance in hell of passing.

Yes, it would stop the war.

:)

I'm running on no sleep for about 25 hours and I'm not as young as I used to be, so expect me to even more asolish than usual today. Assuming that's possible. I'm to tired to ponder questions of infinity.

You should quit smoking today! You can't get much worse, right?

Don't hurt me.

I would, but then I'd lose at least 20 pounds and risk random women being impregnated by the site of me.

Yes, that would be tragic. The only hope of Joph and all his kin remaining kings of internet forum post counts everywhere is that your seed dies with you.

Actually, making babies dents the post count. Just ask Tare, Moe, Nepthy and DSD.

That's the real reason you're holding off, isn't it? Joph wants 30k, I've noticed all his random posting lately...you're putting the pressure on, aintcha?!

We need wedding updates, by the by. I have no girl friends to giggle absurdly over fabric and flowers with. The boyfriend is only gay enough in small doses.

Not only were they lengthening tours of duty, they are sending more and more National Guard back into Iraq even though they promised a 5 years at home 1 year deployed plan earlier.

We met with the flower lady, who is, as Joph put it, my "floral soulmate". She's gonna do cool stuff with branches and celosia and grasses and stuff. My table arrangements will have pomegranates and gilded key limes, and the bouquet will be wrapped in either dusty miller or lamb's ear. Faaaaahhhhbulous!!!!!

But not as fabulous as my shoes.

ohhh, and I'm not even a shoe person.

I like Lamb's ear better!

Are you doing a full sit down, served dinner or a buffet or what? I forget if it's an evening thing or lunch time do?

Me too. She's going to wrap the lamb's ear with gold bouillon thread to keep it put, and use the same thread to make leaves for some curly fern and berries for the boutonierres.

Full sit-down dinner. The Poles love meat, but I'm not satisfied with the kitchen's take on beef just yet. We have another tasting this month, I think.

Ah, and I need good dance songs for white folk. Seriously, all I can think of is hip-hop and salsa, and I have to play two polkas (by request).

Not sure. Changes by the day. I have natural wave and Joph likes it down, but both our mothers and sisters feel like it shows off my neck to have it up. I tend to agree, but I look like an old woman with my hair up. I can't help but look at myself and feel like I'm looking at Grandma. The wind here is a *****, too, and I'd hate to go to the trouble to do a Veronica Lake or half-up, half-down only to have it blown to hell.

Also, I'll be wearing a cathedral-length ivory and gold mantilla, and I hear that I need some sort of anchor in my hair, so having it somewhat up might be a keeper.

The money is ludicrous, but I know in my heart it's the right time, place, guy, and way. Joph and I are convinced that this will be our one wedding, so we want something beautiful than we can remember when we're doddering about.
