I REALLY hate being coldFollow

I had my first real experience with getting the chills when sick last night. I've had a couple experiences where I felt cold, but this took the cake. After eating dinner last night I started to feel queasy, and in an about 2 hours it turned into a full fledged bad night. I had the normal running and praying to the pocelain goddess but I also got the chills. I mean, full fledged, I couldnt stop my teeth from clicking together, I was shivering nonstop for about 3 hours. Even drowning in my warmest robe, my big quilt that makes you sweat when its 20 degrees out and two other blankets on top of that, I still felt like I was naked outside in the middle of a snow storm. I

At one point, I made a hot cup of tea, hoping to both settle my stomach and to try and get warm internally. Even knowing it was almost boiling hot, I took a sip, and even that didnt feel hot enough for me. I know it was stupid, but I drank it down anyways, not waiting for it to cool. I was beyond thirsty, and freezing.

The worst has passed, but Im still feeling like I got hit by a train. I had clenched my body up so hard last night trying to keep warm that all my muscles are killing. And I feel bad for my son, who is bored to tears since I dont have the energy to really play with him, but at the same time, why do kids push just the right buttons when you're sick?

Well, the answer to the last question is "because he's anxious", not that it helps to read that. :p

Chills and fever suck, true.

hehe yeah I know. Hes been a real sweetheart, giving me his stuffed frog that helps him when he feels sick, and drawing me pictures. At the same time though, even though Ive let him know I can not get up and run around like I normally do with him, he's getting really nasty when I let him know I can not get up and play with him and his car set.

And 5 yr olds mimicking everything you say is just killing me.

Haha, yeah. I have *no* patience when I'm sick.

Hope he finds ways to entertain himself, and you feel better soon.

DSD, the only thing I've found that helps when I get the chills like that is to do pretty much what you have done, but add in an electric blanket. The other thing that will help a lot if you can manage it is to relax your muscles. The tense muscles constrict bloodflow, making you feel cold. As soon as you start to relax, you'll start to feel warmer.

Failing that, having a naked warm someone to cuddle with would help. Want me to clear my afternoon? Smiley: sly

Sorry you're sick sweets, but happy to hear it sounds like it's on it's way out. Try taking a nice warm bath, throw the towels and your bathrobe in the dryer while you're in there, and have hubby or boy go get them for you when you're ready to get out!

Absolutely. I make my one year old help me with the laundry.

The chills are the suck, hope you feel better.

P.S - DSD, what would be a polite way to tell my gf that I am not moving to Ottawa, regardless of whether it breaks up the relationship or not?

It sounds like DSD has caught one of my hangovers. I knew they were rough, but who woulda thunk they were contagious?

Nexa, I would loooove to do that. But my lil one is also being a cuddle ***** and I can only manage to put him down for 5 min at a time before he starts to wail. Fortunately for me, hes pretty happy vegging in my arms.

Eld, I thought of having the Mr do that for me last night, but even in the middle of august his feet and hands are blocks of ice ha! And as for not clenching up, I know in pracitcality that holds true. But how do you tell your body that when its trying to shrink down to find any iota of warmth?

I dont have the chills now, but I hope to never have them that bad again. Right now Im just exhausted and sipping tea, hoping to calm the torrents that is my stomach.

Maybe a bath tonight when the Mr gets home. mmmmmm

Hijacking back then :p

Isnt coke supposed to help settle an unsettled tummy? I know ginger ale does but I cant stand the stuff. I tried sipping a little bit of coke earlier and it made things worse. Any other home remedies for a queasy tummy that wont knock it off?

Hoping you continue to feel better DSD. I hate getting the chills. I can only remember one episode when I was young when the chills were just so bad, they just wouldn't go away. My mother, being a nurse, wouldn't cover me up in blankets galore because "you have a fever and you can't stay warm like that, it'll just drive the fever up." How I hated her saying that.

So, Bohdi, what's up with you and the GF? Thought everything was smooth sailing.

Peppermint. If you have any real peppermint tea (not black tea with peppermint flavoring) than that could help. Ginger ale doesn't really help unless it's real ginger (which most isn't, just flavoring) but if you have any ginger, you could make a tea as well. Salteens are usually good, or a small bit of toast.

Try 7-up or Sprite if you can't handle ginger ale. Make sure it is flat.

Works wonders. Coke not so much.

As a kid it was always FLAT Canada Dry Ginger Ale. It had to be flat because the carbonation apparently does not help a sour stomach.

Ive heard flat soda too. Tea is seeming to help so long as I take my time with it.

Weird thing I went through last night was that, even knowing I was going to pay for it eventually ( and I did ) there was one point where I absolutely had to have water. It was the sweetest thing in the world. I didnt want anything else, only water. And every sip was a tantalizing dream come true. Being the greedy woman that I am, I couldnt say no to one more sip.

Its funny how your body can make you really crave what it needs.

Have a Pedia-pop if you keep them around for the kids. Gets the fluid in you slowly enough for your tummy to tolerate it, and stabilizes those electrolytes.

Samira is recommending that someone who is freezing with chills and hates it so much that she starts a thread about how she hates being cold, should have a popscicle.

Good call Sam.
