If a crime has been committed, the police will intervene as necessary. Disturbing the peace, even yours, is generally a misdemeanor. So far, most police officers won't try to justify battering down a door for a misdemeanor noise complaint unless they have reason to believe lives are at stake once they get to the scene.
There was a thread a few months ago about a court case where cops arrived to check out a noise complaint and saw people fighting, blood, etc. They did break in, and it was contested on 4th Amendment grounds.
Bottom line: they use their discretion. You have recourse through the courts if you think they overstepped. Probably better not to give them a reason to shoot you.
