While the lack of action to prevent the capture of HMS Cornwall's boarding party has made yat another dent in the morale of ordinary Sailors, the calm and well judged actions of the British Diplomatic core has shown yet again that we are miles ahead of the rest of the world in this regard.

This last few weeks has been very nervous for us members of the Royal navy, not only where some of our comrades in a very unpleasent position but the wider consequences of a failed diplomatic solution are plain for everyone i think.

Still all's well that ends well and it will prove interesting reading when the lads get back home and even more so when the truth is told in the Pubs and clubs when a few beers are bought for them.

I actually know two of the people involved and served with one so it was very close to home.

Apparently, the average sailor is also a day late and a dollar short.

So what was up with the patrol helicopter leaving before they were done with the merchant boat they were searching and the way the soldiers behaved while in custody?

I'd rather see jack tar's opinion on the story than Jophiel's, quite honestly.

That aside, WTF is wrong with Europeans? 15 hostages get taken by the Iranians, GPS (or whatever the f'uck monkey system you guys coopered out of bailing wire and tin foil) data proves it out, and you pricks just let them sit there, making duress induced apologies to the Iranians on video.

well ours at least come back alive and in one piece, unlike say the PoW's still missing in Korea and Vietnam.

The whole shambles about them being took on the other hand is another matter. They should have blown the sh*t out of the Iranian patrol boats LONG before they got near Boarding team.

Now that the wheels are about to fall off of the 'plan for world domination by aggressive and multiple wars', the neo-cons and their rapidly dwindling support base are being shown to be unable to live up to yet another of Bush's pre-election promises....you know...the one about 'humility'. along with the other ones about 'honor' and integrity.

never mind eh....You'll probably get another go in a few years!

Unless of course India or China becomes the dominant world power by then.

We'll stick with the narrower, intended (as evidenced by context), definition.

Rhetoric
1.(in writing or speech) the undue use of exaggeration or display; bombast.

As opposed to starting a pointless military operation that would've gotten them killed? I'm not sure you've ever looked at a map, but Iran is right next to some other country where your boys are in a delicate situation at the moment. I'm sure Iran could change "delicate" to "positively painful".

There are member states and there are member states. We don't happen to give a sh;t about anyone but the other veto wielders.

From what I read/heard it is customary to have air support during the entire operation but in this case the Lynx helicopter returned to the Cornwall after the intial bording was done. By the time it was back in the air and on its way to the dhow the sailors were already captured and heading back to Iran.

Secondly the CIA had issued warning to the UK military/navy to be strongly wary of Iranian action thanks to the arrest of a number of Iranian officials earlier in the year, however there was no rising threat level issued for the area.

As to the whole 'should have blown them out of the water' statement, the sailors/marines asked for orders from command and were told to hold fire. The official word being that there was fear of loss of life and an escalation of violence between UK/Iran.
