President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran would free the 15 detained British sailors and marines Wednesday as an Easter holiday "gift" to the British people.

Iranian state television said the 14 men and one woman, who were seized while on patrol in the northern Persian gulf on March 23, would leave Iran on Thursday. An Iranian official in London said they would be handed over to British diplomats in Tehran.

"On the occasion of the birthday of the great prophet (Muhammad) ... and for the occasion of the passing of Christ, I say the Islamic Republic government and the Iranian people -- with all powers and legal right to put the soldiers on trial -- forgave those 15," he said, referring to the Muslim prophet's birthday on March 30 and the Easter holiday.
Huh. No mention of Passover in there Smiley: laugh

Well, good for the British soldiers and I hope they come through okay. And, on a purely selfish note, maybe now gas prices will dip again.

Keeping my politics in one thread for the moment, we also have the arise of the Global War on Rhetoric
The Military Times wrote:
A memo for the committee staff, circulated March 27, says the 2008 bill and its accompanying explanatory report that will set defense policy should be specific about military operations and "avoid using colloquialisms."

The "global war on terror," a phrase first used by President Bush shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S., should not be used, according to the memo. Also banned is the phrase the "long war," which military officials began using last year as a way of acknowledging that military operations against terrorist states and organizations would not be wrapped up in a few years.

Committee staff members are told in the memo to use specific references to specific operations instead of the Bush administration’s catch phrases. The memo, written by Staff Director Erin Conaton, provides examples of acceptable phrases, such as "the war in Iraq," the "war in Afghanistan", "operations in the Horn of Africa" or "ongoing military operations throughout the world."
Republicans are, of course, claiming that this is a horrible, horrible thing and that House Democrats can't possibly understand the scope of violent extremism unless it's wrapped in carefully prepared catch-phrases and sound bites developed by Rove & Co. Because being specific in spending bills on what exactly you need the money for is a silly, shameful, freedom-hating thing.
