Recently, I've been leaning more and more towards a buddhist mindset as far as my outlook on life is concerned, but I didn't realize it until I had a very nice conversation with a random guy at the bar this weekend. Apparently, I've been living by at least a few of the steps described in the "Noble Eightfold Path," and this has piqued my curiosity about buddhism in general.

So, for all you self proclaimed buddhists out there, what are some buddhist readings that you'd recommend?

I can't give you any advice on what to read, but Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance is *not* a treatise on the Buddhist religion, nor is it particularly insightful on motorcycle maintenance.

Welcome to the fold, brother.

You mean for bullsh*t western 'look at me, I'm different' Buddhism who's ethics are essentially identical to Christianity, right?

Any book by the Dali Lama. Any book who's title begins 'Zen and the art of'. Siddartha by Hesse. The 'diamond sutra', the 'heart sutra' and the Tao Te Ching, because 90% of the time, people unfamiliar with Buddhism actually mean Taoism.

good luck.

So Winnie the Pooh was as much a children's story as Animal Farm, I guess.

Thich Nhat Hanh is a guy out of Veitnam his stuff is written rather plainly and simply. The Dalai Llama has a number of books ranging from the very simple basics to the more indepth philosophy behind everything (and it does get indepth). The Modern Classic version of the Dhammapada by Wallis is simply contrasting 'do vs dont' but is still solid.

There is a lot of new age ***** so be wary.

There is no 'bible' but rather an extremely large body of writings such as sutras or non-canonical text such as the story of Menander.

Look, I know you mean well, but honestly all of the village idiot slots are taken.

I appreciate your posts equally as much.

The whole rating me down thing is pretty cute too. Seriously though, I have an asbestos net over my monitor. I'm sure you're a real firebreathing dragon irl, but your flames have no power over me here.

The need to bring it up proves otherwise.

Whoda thunk it? A thread on buddhism devolved into flames faster than a thread on 'what kind of christian are you?".

Buddhism is a deep and complex philosophy that is too often approached by westerners from a position of ignorance and western bias (something anthropogists had to learn the hard way, trying to understand a different culture based on your own culture is always gonna end badly). It is all to often approached in a simplified and completely distorted manner which is nothing more than new age self help bullsh'it

Even 'good cases' of westerners approaching the subject can be met by scorn by jaded 'monastics' such as Smash, case in point Siddhartha by Hesse.

There's a difference between needing to do something and being entertained by it.

I think telling someone who gets his jollies from sanctimonious flaming that they're completely wasting their breath is as great a joy as any. I mean, I do assume that he is in some way either trying to deter me from posting, or entice me into engaging him in some kind of flame-off. I feel it only fair to warn him that I'll be doing neither.

It's part of a conspiracy to promote Christianity and drive away prospective converters to Buddhism! Those damn Christians win again!

Buddhism for Sheep.

And for the Taoists, your Winnie the Pooh themed books are not complete without Eeyore's Gloomy Little Instruction Book.

Let me assure you in all seriousness, I wasn't flaming you. I feel only pity for you. Oh and slight depression at the long term fate of humanity as I imagine you're much more representative of 'people' than most posters on this board.

Sorry you got confused about it :(

Actually, I think Eeyore is best summed up with "down the street, not across the tracks".

Actually it's a very simple philosophy that's overcomplicated by nearly everyone.

The basic tenets of Buddhism are both very simple and almost universally accepted. It's the doing something about them part that becomes complex and challenging.

You want to practice Buddhism? All you have to do is 1. accept that there is suffering the world. 2. Accept that suffering is caused by people's selfishness 3. Agree that ending that selfishness would end suffering. and 4. Be as selfless as possible.

That's it, kids. The rest is all semantics.

To the best of my knowledge, he's a robot that pimps on the side, mostly to the left. I don't make a point to question him on it in too much detail what with the lazers (pew pew!) and all.
