According to yet another study, tobacco and alcohol rank as having more detrimental effects than many "illicit" drugs. If there was a balance struck that outlawed alcohol and/or tobacco, but made Ecstacy and Marijuana legal, what would be your poison of choice?

Pick your poison (after new legislation)
I would bootleg my own alcohol, ***** the law.:14 (16.7%)
I would smuggle cigs from a neighbouring country:2 (2.4%)
I would find a way to get cigs AND alcohol:11 (13.1%)
Finally! Marijuanna is legal, who needs anything else?:25 (29.8%)
E is for me.:2 (2.4%)
None of the above, I like other drugs better:1 (1.2%)
None of the above, I don't need a chemical crutch:27 (32.1%)
None of the above, I am afraid of the gubberment and am programmed to shun other drugs:2 (2.4%)
Total:84

LONDON (AFP) - Alcohol is nearly as harmful as heroin and tobacco is more dangerous than cannabis, LSD or ecstasy, according to a new classification table of drugs published in The Lancet medical journal Friday.

The table, drawn up by a group of leading British scientists, ranked heroin, cocaine, barbiturates and street methadone as the most harmful drugs, closely followed by alcohol in fifth place.

Tobacco was assessed to be the ninth most dangerous drug behind ketamine -- commonly used as a horse tranquilizer -- benzodiazepines, which are prescription tranquillisers, and amphetamines.

Cannabis was said to be the 11th most harmful. LSD was ranked 14th and so-called "clubbers' drug" ecstasy in 18th, or third last, place...

I think it's an interesting topic. I've never smoked cigs, but I like the occasional cigar. In highschool I did my fair share of weed, and in college my fair share of alcohol. I'd have to say that with new laws I would not miss alcohol nor tobacco and I'd probably divulge in the occasional "old man peace pipe". As in weed in one of those old man pipes, not one of those fangled new pipes the kids use. It would be great on a nogahide recliner with a smoking jacket.

I'd look like this guy but with a different kind of tobacco.

I didn't see choice for bootleg my Guiness, while I take a puff on my maryjane.

I never smoke cigerettes, but was known to toke on a joint when I had a chance. Since I not one to drink more then one or two beers in an evening, I see nothing wrong with a Guiness or glass of wine with dinner, for my health.

I don't agree with the study. They're taking into account the harmful effects on your body with a standard dose when most of the harm is caused by your actions due to having your mind altered and/or taking too much of the harder drugs. Seriously they're saying Marijuana is more harmful than Ecstacy. When's the last time you heard of someone ODing on Marijuana?

I voted to find a way to get my Cigs and Alcohol. Frankly I don't think any of it should be illegal, it's your choice if you want to poison your body.

You could also ask when was the last time someone actually got a clean batch of E. Usually it has crap like speed and various powders to cut it before pressing.

Maybe straight MDMA is less harmful that smoking a joint, but then maybe a tablet form of THC would be less harmful that MDMA.

I say lets legalize it all and reenact Caligula

I wouldn't miss alchool at all.

And weed is pretty much like alchool in terms of harm, but at least it turns people into smily, if somewhat lazy, people. As opposed to alchool that generally turns you into a priCk.

I do think ecstasy is quite harmful on the long-term if you do too much. It's bad for your general state of mind too. But if you can manage to take one, say, once or twice a year, its really completely harmless. I knew some people that did 7 a night when I was at Uni, and they were pretty fUcked up.

Like, Monx-fUcked-up.

Cigarettes should be illegal either way. It's just pure poison.

I only tried ecstacy a couple times, but I was pretty bored with it. Back when I would have partaken of such things, I much preferred shrooms or ketamine.

Good thing this scenario isn't withing the realm of reality.

You show me a president that will outlaw drinking (again) and I'll show you a dead man.

I don't drink (yet), and I'll never smoke (asthma), but I'll be damned if I won't help someone make some moonshine so they can have their fix. The day the governments decide what the people can do to their own bodies, is the day a revolution will be brewing =p.

Most of what they're saying has been known for a while; however, I'm wondering exactly what criterion they're using to determine "harmfulness". For example, heroin has effectively zero side-effects when used "correctly". People tend to overdose on it, but aside from that the primary side-effect is that it is incredibly, incredibly addictive. That makes me suspect that they are relying partially on actual statistics rather than scientific results.

Personally, I would be satisfied with making alcohol a permanent prescription drug (just so it's less convenient to get, especially for minors), and making tobacco prescription available to those over the legal age currently, but not to minors at the time of implementing the legislation.

And I think marijuana should follow the same suit as being medically prescribed but available for recreation. I don't know if it's just conspiracy ********* but I've heard that one of the main reasons it's not legal is the paper/cloth industries not wanting it to be a competing market (apparently it's much more efficient for paper than trees, and more efficient for cloth than cotton). Again, maybe that's just political spin or lies, I haven't researched it.

Oh, and personally, I don't touch any of the stuff. The occasional drink, but I don't get drunk, barely even buzzed. I don't think it's ethical, but that doesn't mean I think outlawing it is necessarily ethical either. Listening to loud music is bad for your ears, but I don't think the government should outlaw it... I think people should just be stupid enough to not overdo it.

Mind-altering substances cause you to be someone other than yourself. If your life is really so unbearable, fix it. Trying to escape from it through mind-altering substances is just a futile cycle that will ultimately make matters worse. A session of therapy will do more for you than a blunt or a shot of jager ever will.

I have little respect for people who don't even respect themselves.
