LONDON, England (CNN) -- Fifteen British Marines on patrol in the Persian Gulf have been "seized" by the Iranian navy, the British Ministry of Defense said.

The Marines were "engaged in routine boarding operations of merchant shipping in Iraqi territorial waters," the ministry said in a statement on Friday.

A U.S. military official who monitors the region told CNN the Marines stopped an Iranian ship suspected of smuggling automobiles, and boarded it for an inspection.

While the Marines were on board, six Navy ships from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard showed up and claimed the British had entered Iranian waters.

A dispute ensued over whether the Marines were in Iraqi, international, or Iranian territorial waters, and the 15 were then seized and taken to Iran, the U.S. military official said.

An Iraqi fisherman told Reuters the incident took place in the Shatt al-Arab waterway that marks the southern stretch of Iraq's border with Iran. His account could not be immediately confirmed.

The British ministry's statement said the Marines "completed a successful inspection of a merchant ship when they and their two boats were surrounded and escorted by Iranian vessels into Iranian territorial waters."

The statement added: "We are urgently pursuing this matter with the Iranian authorities at the highest level and on the instructions of the Foreign Secretary, the Iranian ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Office. The British Government is demanding the immediate and safe return of our people and equipment."

There was no immediate word from Tehran on the incident.

The U.S. military official said the British Royal Marines are believed to be unharmed. It was not immediately clear where in Iran they were taken.

The British Foreign Office said Iran's ambassador in London had been summoned and Britain was demanding their immediate safe release, Reuters reported.

It's things like this that gives credence to the thought that Iran is a troublemaker. They are lucky that those weren't American marines, as that's all Bush would have needed to saber rattle.

If roles were reveresed and Iran had a reason to be in waters near British/American territorial waters, both of them would've done the same. Would either of them be considered trouble mkaers for seizing troops from a nation that's not friendly to them?

Agreed. Bush doesn't need much of a reason to go into Iran as is.

The last time British marines were seized, after a while it became clear that they did enter Iranian waters. Wouldn't surprise me if this time it will be the same.

Ultimately it's all politics, it's pretty unlikely anything serious will begin from this.

Never proven about Iranian waters, but suspect.

The FCO seems bloody adamant that this time they were provably inside Iraqi waters.

Fingers crossed for 'em.

In your time machine, maybe.

Still in Iranian hands, location unknown.

And they've just been accused of spying by the Iranians.

The American Navy said they would've refused to be taken prisoners and would've opened fire. Something about their rule of engagement forcing them into self-defense.

I hope they get released safe and soon, but all this is not gearing up for a very peaceful future with Ira...

and i think it will take a couple more years and thousands of innocent deaths before we come close to some sort of peace.

ask yourself what WE would do if, say, syerian patrol boats were "routinely" stopping our supply ships in IRAQI waters?

same thing.

pissing contest. just pushing their buttons trying to get them to respond. kicking sand in their face tpe of thing. and you dan bet we are doing it on purpose. just itching for them to attack us so we dont have to go through congress to blast their nuclear program to hell and back.

waste of effort if you ask me. israel is gona do it soon enough without our permission anyway.
