So there's a story in the ole Chicago Tribune today about some dame who tried to wear some anti-gay t-shirt to school and they got upset and blah, blah. I don't give a fuck about that story. I want to know about the meta-story here...
The Trib wrote:
Zamecnik donned her shirt in response to the Day of Silence, a national event recognized by many schools. Students can refuse to speak during the school day--even in response to faculty questions--to bring attention to the harassment of homosexuals.
[...]
Zamecnik and her parents tried to discuss the incident with school officials, McCaleb said. He said the parents also tried to work out an agreement that would allow their daughter to wear a similar T-shirt following next month's Day of Silence.
'the fuck? I'm all for gay rights but do we need an annual "Act like a mute" day in our high schools? Isn't that counter to, you know, actual academic learning?

Edited because I missed that the original incident was last year. Regardless, my point stands.

Asseless Chaps day didn't get as many participants.

Neither did the Sound of Music sing-along in the school auditorium.

Annually. It was my mistake for not noting the "last April" in the original story.

All in all, I'd say it's probably good for High School aged kids to learn that non violent pointless protests aren't about effecting change, but are mainly an excuse to avoid class. Thus they can move right on to sit ins in college to protest the lack of a Lesbian Peanut Studies department.

I'm not sure how allowing the kids to not speak for one day would deter any learning.

Call me a traditionalist, but I always considered communication between student and teacher to be an important part of the academic process.

You're saying mute children can't learn? Oh sure, let's just throw them all into an incinerator at birth then! Have we learned nothing from "The Miracle Worker"??

Of course it is. However, not only does the student not speaking mean they aren't communicating with the teachers in some way, but this is also only one day a year.

Sure, but coupled with 'blindfold yourself for global warming day' or 'hop on one foot to save bunnies from cosmetic testing day' it can really add up.

I'm sure they can come up with some cutsey means of flashcards or mime or phrases taught to a parrot to communicate. I don't buy that it won't be a distraction.

I don't care if they have "Wear an Activist T-shirt Day" or "give a Speech During Lunch Day" or "Hang A Buncha Posters Day". But things that actively interfere with learning are counterproductive to being at school in the first place.

Careful there Joph. You're on the Slippery Slope to becoming a card carrying Conservative. First it's annoyance at idiotic displays in school. Then you'll be arguing that the education system shouldn't be about instilling political agendas in kids. Then you'll recognize the Evil Liberal Plan(tm) to brainwash schoolchildren into becoming mindless liberal kidbots via political activist integration in public schools.

Next thing you know, you'll be wearing a "Go Bush Go!" T-shirt at rallies and talking about what country we should bomb next to protect us all from the spread of global-liberal-kidbotness...

Right, because that's what conservatives advocate. Not ludicrous sex education classes and prayer in school.
