Today is going to be fun.

There has been an ongoing disagreement between Management and the Owners of the business for the last 3 months. The owners (2 brothers) have been high strung because of a failure of another business venture and also over the death of their father. On Friday the one owner came in and had a complete hissy fit in front of the management, in front of 3 new staff members and in front of customers. 2 regular staff members put in their two weeks notice. They were promptly fired, which is against labour law and they are now filing claims equal to the two weeks shifts they were entitled to complete.

The one manager upon hearing what happened tried to talk to the Owners but they started making personal attacks on him. When he lost his cool the owners mentioned that this is the type of talk they should not be having in front of the staff. The manager fired back stating that the Owner should not have done the same last night. He put in his two weeks notice in writing the next day and after it was accepted he was promptly fired, so he is filing a claim as well.

come Monday 80% of the staff has put in their notice. Never in my entire working career have I seen the sh'it hit the fan like it did this weekend. I'm none to worried about myself since I have the management to use as references, there are lots of jobs available right now and I am doing alright. However I have a feeling that the couple days it will take me to find a new job will be like pulling teeth.

I didn't realize gay prostitution had such a need for managers. Learn something new every day.

Well, good luck on your promotion to lead load catcher!

1 day. Provided it's not a holiday or someone died, like the owner.

District Manager of All Mac's Convenience Stores in the area decided that she could save a buck by mailing out the checks. I was supposed to be paid by noon on Friday. It's almost Noon Monday...Still No Check.

If it doesn't show up with today's mail, I need to find out how to go about filing a claim and ******** that stupid ***** over.

Someone always has to be in charge when it comes to gay sex, surely you knew that BT?

Check and mail is usually post dated. How she manages her payroll is within her rights as long as everything is dated appropriately and all payroll reports get filed on time. You can try to call whatever department of revenue you have in your state to see if there's something locally that would get her, but she should be in the OK.

Your better bet would be a better job. If she's doing that, then financially speaking, she's doing craptastic in the first place OR she probably over-employed, which means someone is bound to be laid off.

Then it might be an isolated incident. Wait until next payday before you get grumpy about it. If your payday is on Friday and they are going to mail the checks, they should mail them earlier or at least move your payday to another day.

@Bhodi, do you think the owners are going to close shop?

I'm looking for a better job.

I doubt that she over-emplyoed considering that all the stores in the city are hiring. She's even cut back shifts for everyone at my store my store just so that she could hire two more people.

She has absolutely no idea how to run a store.

Ontario doesn't seem to have the most clear definition of what should happen
Quote:

Employees must be paid on a regular, recurring payday and given a statement showing their wages and deductions for that pay period.

or straight from ESA

Quote:
11. (1) An employer shall establish a recurring pay period and a recurring pay day and shall pay all wages earned during each pay period, other than accruing vacation pay, no later than the pay day for that period. 2000, c. 41, s. 11 (1).

Manner of payment

(2) An employer shall pay an employee’s wages,

(a) by cash;

(b) by cheque payable only to the employee; or

(c) in accordance with subsection (4). 2000, c. 41, s. 11 (2).

Place of payment by cash or cheque

(3) If payment is made by cash or cheque, the employer shall ensure that the cash or cheque is given to the employee at his or her workplace or at some other place agreeable to the employee. 2000, c. 41, s. 11 (3).

Direct deposit

(4) An employer may pay an employee’s wages by direct deposit into an account of a financial institution if,

(a) the account is in the employee’s name;

(b) no person other than the employee or a person authorized by the employee has access to the account; and

(c) unless the employee agrees otherwise, an office or facility of the financial institution is located within a reasonable distance from the location where the employee usually works. 2000, c. 41, s. 11 (4).

If employment ends

(5) If an employee’s employment ends, the employer shall pay any wages to which the employee is entitled to the employee not later than the later of,

(a) seven days after the employment ends; and

(b) the day that would have been the employee’s next pay day. 2000, c. 41, s. 11 (5).

You could *****, or complain that they should set up pay periods so cheques are not mailed out on a Thursday/Friday (since it usually takes 3 business days) to get a mail delivered through Canada Post. Also feel free to phone up the Ontario Labour Board, they have people there that can answer your questions. Also probe them for answers, since they probably know stuff that you wouldnt have even thought of.

Actually, up until this pay period, our payday was every other Friday by noon.

I'd switch to Direct deposit, but two things keep me from doing so:

1. She's screwed others over with it, they brought in the correct forms for direct deposit and she still hasn't dealt with it.

2. My bank refuses to let money be put into my account without them holding the cash for a week.

Seriously, I'm going job hunting tomorrow, if my check doesn;t show up today, I'm calling the store and giving my 2 weeks...or I might quit outright, I only have 2 shifts on the upcoming schedule(I usually do 6 eight hour shifts, this shows how much she's cutting back...even on the "Rob My ***" shift) and I've already done my shifts for the current schedule.

I had a place foolishly issue my check in a tardy manner once. I told them if I wanted to do community service I'd kill a bum.

I can't complain about my job. I love my new employer. I loved where I last worked too, was there for 10 years. Now, it's just about whether my hubby can find a job soon.

No. I did that to the girlfriend once before and she was stressed (with reason) about bills and rent getting paid, though I did find a new job within the week. Didn't want to do it to her again. Though after talking with her she seems remarkably fine with it so I just might put in my two weeks today and if they fire me I will file a claim for my wages.

Turns out the exceedingly cheerful and nice personal assistant to the owners had been advocating firing a number of the higher paid more 'on the managers side' employees for the last 2 months, he wanted to replace them with lower paid grunts and start fresh. Apparently I was on the list to get axed. We will be having lunch this afternoon to discuss the state of affairs and frankly I am going to speak my mind, no angry like but I am going to confront him in front of what little staff we have left.

I'll let you all know how it goes.
