A homeless woman accused of setting the Saturday morning fire that killed four people and seriously injured another was trying to warm her feet because she had lost her shoes, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Mary Smith, whose last known address is listed in court records as a North Side homeless shelter, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and aggravated arson in connection with a fire at 3553 N. Fremont St. that killed the friends from Belvidere, Ill.
During Smith's bond hearing, Assistant Cook County State's Atty. Mary Lacy said Smith gave a videotaped statement admitting to setting the fire when she lit a dollar bill that someone gave her.
"She admitted setting the dollar bill on fire," Lacy said. "She said among other things that her feet were cold and she was trying to warm herself."
