Best & Worst Character CreationFollow

#1 Mar 09 2007 at 1:07 PM Rating: Excellent
Heya all,

This evening's Ravecast is going to be about Character Creation and I'd like to ask your opinion on the matter.

So:

- What game would you consider to have the most fun character creation?

why?

- What game would you consider to have the absolute most atrocious character creation?

- What about the most impressive?

- Time consuming?

- Where there any that just made you decide or at least contemplate not even play the game?

The show will be this evening from 6:30pm - 9:30pm Pacific Time. Click Here to Tune In

LOTRO, Vanguard, CoH (and CoV) and Eve Online all have nice character create options. EQ and WoW have, to be nice about it, minimalist character creations.

Among offline games I'd have to add Morrowind and Oblivion as having very fun character creations.

In at least one instance (CoH), character creation was the most fun part of the game.

Woah woah woah.

Oblivion??

Character creation is meaningless and mindumbing in Oblivion.

But there's so many ways to kill them, and they cry and beg for mercy! You can make them look like anyone!

It's very theraputic.

The Sims does have awesome character creation. Kinda wish the Pets expansion gave you something better than Cats & Dogs, though.

I say LotRO needs female Dwarves!

I did nearly pick it up after I saw that one web site where they were standing around in pools of their own urine crying bitterly. Then, I dunno, something shiny went by.

You should try building a magnificent castle, adopting children and killing them off one at a time and placing their headstones in your hedge maze to haunt.

It gets boring after a while, but it eats up an afternoon.

CoH/CoV has the best graphical character creation but it also has the advantage of not layering armor over your character so you can design your uniform. LoTRO is well done as well; I've never played EQ2 to guess how theirs is. As Samira pointed out, character creation is probably the funnest part of CoH/CoV.

Weakest generation I've seen was in FFXI where you pick between Model A and Model B where both look nearly identical and then choose Hair A and Hair B where both are nearly identical.

Most time consuming is probably the free MMORPG Rubies of Eventide where you basically design your player class during character generation. Decide if your character will have skill in Shields, Heavy Armor, Lore, Scouting, One-Handed Axes, Two-Handed Axes, Polearms, Crossbows, Mining, Druidic Magic, Necromatic Magic, etc etc... Then assign points in all the skills you chose and assign points in your basic character stats. They have optional templates which make it go quicker but it's still pretty time intensive if you care to tweak all the bells and whistles.

The biggest shame is when you have 2nd generation games such as FFXI and WoW which still have weaker character customization than friggin' Everquest does.

I had a nice headstone collection in my backyard just from killing neighbors, but after I had so many of them my real characters kept getting scared to death by the ghosts :/

EQ2 character creation looked awesome when it was in development, but then they changed a bunch of things before launch and made it so you couldn't get the same results. Like they made the sliders not change as much and limited the skin-tones. It's still not terrible, just a little disappointing on release.

They changed CoH's character generator so you couldn't create skin-toned Spandex outfits any longer! Biggest game nerf EVER!!! Smiley: mad

Traveler had far and away the most detailed character creation system I've toyed around with. The tabletop role playing game, with dice. You could die in character creation. Traveler was sort of famous for that.

The problem with modern, online RPG's having detailed character creation systems is that if your history is really important, you might make errors in creation that you regret after a few hundred hours of playing that character.

And of course the game designers could be asshats and implement new features based on, say, your character's Diety which didn't matter previously...can we say...EverQuest.

EveOnline had a nice system, from what I recall, I didn't play much but I think I didn't make any choices which would have cost me days and days (of offline time waiting) worth of skilling up to compensate. Dunno.

Ultima IV had an interesting system whereby you chose the relative merit of virtues and this played you into a starting character class. I recall being a shepherd and thinking well heck this sucks - but actually it didn't really matter much and in some ways made the game easier on later.

Call of hero's/villians was without doubt the best

Vanguard was without doubt the worst.

I want to create a clear visible style to my char that sets him apart, i am not interested in lengthening my fingers by 1/12th of a mm.

Give me 50 hair styles, 50 tattoo options, piercings, eye patches ANYTHING that visibly changes my appearance VISIBLY and shove the micro changes to eyebrow arch and limb length up your *****

Completely agree. FFXI had the most disappointing character creation of any MMO I've played.

Vanguard's is fun, unless they've changed it, but back in beta you could make horrible space mutant characters with the creation.
