Surprise, Surprise.

I was going to bump the other wiki thread, but it's like, way over there.

I saw this story earlier and thought to myself "does anyone other people who are other Wikipida editors really care about the credentials of wikipedia editors?"

It's always going to be what it is, a good place to start to check out something you know virtually nothing about. Or alternately, if you're Gbaji, the source of all knowledge on the planet.

I checked with a waste management consultant and was informed that this is impossible as the gravity from such a large pile of steaming **** would implode in on itself forming a black hole which would swallow up the Earth almost immediately.

Well. I'll ask the obvious question:

Were his contributions to the site incorrect? Invalid? Bogus? Anything?

If not, why does this matter? The whole point of Wikipedia is that a process of peer review and ratings will cause the resulting information to be as "true" as possible. It's somewhat similar to the rating system used by ebay. If a person has made a number of good transactions, he'll be rated highly, thus increasing the likelyhood that future transactions with that person will also be good. If a user on Wiki regularly posts information that other people agree is accurate, they'll be considered a "trusted" source. If not, they wont. Regardless of what he claimed in his bio, his work on the site should speak for itself in that regard.

Dunno. I just kinda think that this whole thing is somewhat irrelevant. The whole objective of Wiki is to come up with a method to present data that doesn't rely on a "professional source", but rather a consensus of the people. In that context, who he actually is in real life just doesn't matter.

He was employed by the for profit division.

Had he not been, I can't imagine it would have made headlines.

For a medium which is trying to present itself as equally valid to more traditional academic sources of information, saying that you are deciding fact based on the "consensus of the people" versus professional research isn't much of a selling point.

Smiley: laugh Wow, I wouldn't compare anything to the eBay rating system if I wanted people to think well of it.

'Cause plagiarism and made up data sets have never occured in the esteemed towers of academia.

If a Wiki entrance is inaccurate, it gets fixed, and fixed fast.
