Being a longtime CIV geek, I found this mildly interesting.

I have to admit I didn't realize a couple of these even existed. I voted for these:

The Pyramids, still impressive in scale and simplicity. Massive monuments to humanity's desire to say "yeah, mine's bigger!"

The Easter Island Statues, giant headed stone dudes on a deserted island. Need I say more?

Machu Picchu, because it largely symbolizes the breathtaking majesty humanity is willing to destroy for the sake of naked greed.

Neuschwanstein Castle, because, 1 I didn't know it existed, and 2, it's as close as I could get to voting for Disney Land.

The Sydney Opera House, because it's a such a triumph of design.

Angkor, because I figure the Hindus deserve one for all of the massive monuments around the world they've constructed to their crazy cow worshiping pantheon.

Finally, Kiyomizu Temple, because we all love ninjas.

I still think the giant stone spheres of Costa Rica are pretty cool.

I've never wanted to go to Germany before.

Meh, it's ok for a summer cottage, I suppose. Problem is, all the servants would be Germans. You know how hard it is to keep them from pooing in the black forest cake.

I voted for these ages ago and had to look up my old picks.

They were: Easter Island, Pyramids at Giza, Great Wall, Angkor, Petra, Stonehenge & Machu Picchu. I only considered antiquities since I had a hard time ranking modern engineering ahead of good old fashioned slave grunt-work.

That and I was pissed that I couldn't vote for "Cure for Cancer".

Yeah, an engineering marvels one would be nice to see somewhere where I could vote for the Manhattan Project or Small Pox Eradication or whatnot.

Stonehenge

Really? Stonehenge has never struck me as particularly impressive.

For as long as Stonehenge has been up and we're still making History Channel specials speculating on how it was done, I'd consider it a wonder.

The Hagia Sophia was on my short-list but picking it would have meant that the terrorists had won.

It's even less impressive in real life. It's right next to a major roadway for one thing.

I guess.

I think of Chichén Itzá as much more of an accomplishment. Moving big rocks is fascinating and all, but it's not like technology in 500AD Mexico had advanced to the point of making it a trivial thing.

Although you'd have two brown people sites then, and they'd probably start to get uppity.

Neuschwanstein Castle - Candy Box purdy but when I saw it, it just reminded me of. . well... what Smash said - Disney. An Architectural Cotton-Candy

Sydney Opera House - Never seen it, but I once filled a Typewriter with Scallop Shells so I don't feel the need.

Always wanted to see Petra, but scared I wouldn't be able to outrun the giant sandstone ball (No wait, that was the other movie?)

Stonehenge used to be imprssive when you could wander around it or sleep out inside the circle. I'm still of the view that it's a fossilised Gas Station.

My 7 Wonders of recent history that I've visited would include:

Iron Bridge at Coalbrookdale - even though it was the start of the Industrial Revolution, the engineering perfection has never been equalled.

The Millau Viaduct - Norman Foster given his biggest canvas, even if it is in France.

Selfridges Department Store in Birmingham -Just so beautifully curvaceous

Atocha Railway Station in Madrid - Why knock down a victorian railway station when you can convert it into a combined waiting area/tropical rain forest.

And of course

Debbie Harry's hair in 1981

Ahh, yes, my ancestral home.

At least, it could be. I'd like to visit Bavaria sometime, see what the donuts are like there.

I voted for:

The Great Wall, cos there's nothing like walking on dead slaves to remind you how far we've progresed.

Machu Pichu, especially since its disappearing soon.

Chichen Itza, cos I feel like chicken tonight.

The Pyramids, cos from the top of those, 2000 years of history look down upon you, as Asterix said.

The Taj Mahal, cos after a night out there's nothing like a good curry.

Angkor, because it looked ncie on the picture.

And the Eiffel Tower, because wouldn't it be great if a bunch of steel match-sticks glued together in a pyramid somehow became a "wonder of the world"?!

I agree the Viaduc de Milliau is breathtaking. I've driven on it a couple of times and it is very impressing.

Though, on the whole, i'm with Joph. Old stuff made from sweat impresses me much more than new stuff made with cranes.
