Anyone here got a STD test before?Follow

#1 Mar 08 2007 at 9:51 AM Rating: Decent

I ask because I realise now that the only sexual intercourse related encounter I had was with a man who's HIV status, be it negative or positive, I did not know. I was watching a show today and there was a portion of it about HIV and it suddenly hit me that I'm not invincible, I'm just as suspectible to get infected as everyone else. So I'm left thinking maybe I should run down to the city here and grab a free STD test. I'd ask the man if he's HIV positive or negative but I'd rather not be so abrasive and he can still just lie.

And now I'm super paranoid and scared a little. <_< Anyone gotten an STD test before?

And yes, we used protection.

The new HIV tests are easy peasy. They swab the inside of your cheek. If you're negative, you'll know in less than 20 minutes. If it comes back positive, you should go have a blood test done, because there's a 20ish percent chance of a false positive with the swab test.

You can always opt for a blood test to check for just about everything if you're concerned, but the speed of the HIV swab is great if you just want the peace of mind.

Oh, and I'm getting tested this month as well, but not for a couple more weeks. I think everyone should.

No one asks, then I don't tell.

To be honest it's an archaic policy that will probably be lifted in the next 6-8 years. And seeing as how only 700 servicemen and woman were discharged undo DADT that's a red herring that many people serve, polls and whatnot of soldiers have shown this to, alongside gay individuals in the military and a lot of them don't care. The fact that in the end the number of people discharged is actually quite small every year says as much.

But this isn't a discussion about DADT, it's more about testing and getting it done. I'm gonna call and make an appointment at Planned Parenthood now. :\

Ok, I think anyone who is sexually active and in an even possibly non-monogamous relationship should get tested. Also anyone who could have been exposed through blood contact or IV drug use. I didn't think I had a reason until I found out my husband was ******* some *****. Sometimes you get a nasty surprise.

I'm happy you are secure in your marriage however Eldy, and I'm sure you are correct (I mean that sincerely). I do think that it wouldn't be a bad idea for the majority of the population to get tested however, if for no other reason than the peace of mind.

If the condom did not break and you did indeed use a condom, you should be fine. If you're still worried and can't afford to see a doctor, you can always go to a free clinic to get a test. The last time I got a full std test, was when I had my last pap smear <I had requested that the doctor do the test>. They withdrew blood from me and told me that if I didn't hear anything back within 7 days, I'm fine.

Good luck with the testing.

It's usually safe to wait until at least 3-4 months out from your last encounter and get the blood test, especially if you want to be confident in the results. I always get tested at the start and end of relationships, and my Dr. would always advise me to wait a few months, unless I wanted to do it twice.

This process would have been impossible to achieve before I was married.. I guess I'm just a lucky *****.

Well I'm set for an appointment this Monday. It's the finger prick one, so their testing blood, and I'll know the results in about 10 minutes. I don't imagine I'm infected with anything, like I said the condom didn't break either way, but it's better safe then sorry.

Did you guys know that, I believe it is the health department, actually has recommended that every single person in the country be tested? That that'd be the best way to fight the disease since most people who are infected are infected by people who didn't know they themselves were infected. I strongly advice everyone get tested. Make it a ritual to do some time in whatever relationship your currently in. Or after you break up or move in with the person you'r with.

The last time I had sex was probably a month or two ago, so I imagine I'll be pretty good with the testing.

I had an STD test done before. Twice, actually. They took some blood, sent me off and called me a few days later to say that everything was kopasetic.

Wrong. Condom's aren't guaranteed to protect you from HIV, and there's a bunch of fun little diseases you can catch from protected sex that won't show up on any battery of STD tests. If you choose to be sexually active, just inform yourself of possible signs of infection and try to avoid overtly risky behaviors, but don't blind yourself to the very real possibility that your health still needs monitoring.

Blah blah blah. 99% of people who are responsible enough to have them selves tested for STDs will never have one.

I have, of course(been tested, that is), but the reality is your chances of getting an STD from having unprotected sex once with a festering HIV positive leper just aren't that high. Most people of our generation get the tests for piece of mind, not because of an actual prudent judgment of risk.
