NASA had the right idea: every 4+ letter acronym has to be pronounceable as a word, and thus not to be spelled out as letters. That is why NASA is naa-saw and not N.A.S.A., the way, for example, C.I.A. is spelled out with letters.
I'm trying to persuade people where I work this is the way to go. I'm not going to say the letters on 5 or 6 letter acronyms. It's just stupid. (I'm also not going to attend meetings without agendas, but we have way farther to go on that one).
