Sir Ranulph Fiennes

  • Kicked out of the SAS for 'borrowing' high explosives to blow up the movie set of "Dr Dolittle" because it made his favourite village look ugly.
  • First man to walk to both poles
  • First man to walk to the South pole solo
  • 4 months after Heart Bypass surgery, at the age of 59, he ran 7 marathons in 7 consecutive days on 7 continents
  • Was shortlisted to take over from Sean Connery as James Bond

and coolest of all:

After his Antarctic expedition he was advised to wait a few months before having his frostbitten finger-ends amputated, but couldn't wait, so went into his garden shed and did it himself. He tried a hacksaw at first, but apparently it didn't work very well so he bought a cutting attachment for his electric drill and that did the job.

Holy hell.

Summarily rejected for the Bond role because "his hands were too big and he had a face like a hammer."

Not sure I'd let that assessment get back to him, myself.

Did you like the bit about his frost-damaged toe "falling off" in the bath and him forgetting he'd left it in the bathroom until his wife found it?

I'm assuming they missed out the bit about him successfully ducking a Roundhouse Kick from ChUck Norris

I was kidding, but since we're talking about it, Ralph could sleep over.

I barely noticed him in the English Patient because Kristin Scott-Thomas was in it (DF's only serious rival Smiley: waycool)

Interesting bit in the interview:

The only thing I fear is not fear itself, but a looming 400 foot tall bulletproof robot pimp.

At least he knows his place.

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

I think his middle name is (or should be) Well'ard.

And his full name is Sir Ranulph Twistleton-Wykeham Fiennes.

Anyone who joins the SAS with a moniker like that has got to be one well'ard b'stard, I reckon.

After reading his book about his trip accross the South Pole, I had a lot of admiration for his mate Mike Stroud. He's a doctor somewhere in London. It seems they always end up hating each others guts by the start of any expedition, but he keeps going back for more....

Quote:
"Definitely locating the lost city of Ubar. I did eight major expeditions to find it and eventually did in 1991. It was a great moment but frustrating. Because, well, perhaps you wouldn't repeat this. I had a base camp from which I had travelled hundreds of miles to look for it and it was actually within 300 yards of the camp. You know, in a way, having found it was a bit disappointing because, then, you couldn't go on looking for it."
- about his greatest expedition achievement
