Flaming torch used in daylight bank heist.

CREDIT UNION: Police are seeking a man who threatened to burn a teller.

A man swinging a flaming torch robbed a Fairview bank Monday afternoon, threatening to set fire to people and burn down the building if his demands weren't met.

Late Monday, law enforcement authorities were still looking for the masked robber who made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

The man stormed the Alaska USA Federal Credit Union branch at Seventh Avenue and Juneau Street at about 3:45 p.m., waving the homemade torch -- a T-shirt tied around a yard-long metal pole and set afire, said FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez. He yelled at customers to get down on the floor.

Customers scattered and were able to flee the bank. The robber threatened to burn the teller before the teller handed over the money, Gonzalez said, and then fled on foot.

Following FBI policy, Gonzalez would not say how much the robber got.

Police later recovered the still smoldering T-shirt outside the bank, they said. Officers combed surrounding areas looking for the robber for hours after the incident, police said.

Gonzalez said that in his more than 15 years at the FBI in Anchorage he could not recall a robber using a torch as a weapon.

This is the first bank robbery in Alaska in 2007. Of the 17 bank robberies in 2006, all but one were solved.

The robber is described as a black man in his late 20s, about 5-foot, 7-inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a mask covering part of his face, a tan Carhartt jacket and grey sweatshirt, the FBI said. Anyone with information about him is asked to call police at 786-8900.

Couldn't somebody have just grabbed a fire extinguisher and put it out?

Perhaps a glass of water?

Or just shot the fucker, just about everybody has a gun in Alaska.
