WASHINGTON -- Former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was convicted Tuesday of obstruction, perjury and lying to the FBI in an investigation into the leak of a CIA operative's identity.

Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President **** Cheney, was accused of lying and obstructing the investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity to reporters.

He was acquitted of one count of lying to the FBI.

Libby had little reaction to the verdict. He stood expressionless as the jury left the room. His lawyer, Theodore Wells, said they were "very disappointed" with the verdict.

Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said he was gratified by the verdict.

"The results are actually sad," he added. "It's sad that we had a situation where a high level official person who worked in the office of the vice president obstructed justice and lied under oath. We wish that it had not happened, but it did."
Off for lunch, but don't say I don't keep you informed.

Let's just skip the one and half years of appeals and get right to the the Presidential pardon.

Oh well, I am sure he will be pardoned when Bush's tenure is over.

Extraordinarily unlikely. If he had been convicted of leaking information, maybe, but being convicted of lying to government doesn't lend itself well to pardoning.

Apparently, the defense is petitioning first for a re-trial on the grounds that that jury is a bunch of numb-nuts. If that fails, they're going to appeal.

This story finally made the UK news.

It's being painted as a damning indictment of President Chimp-face.

In a TV interview today, our Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott (The guy who threw a demon right hook at some protestor who threw an egg at him) was asked:

Interviewer: What do you think of Mr Blair's relationship with President Bush
Prescott: Not a lot.

Smiley: lol

I'm not sure the numbness of the jury's collective nuts wasn't due to the trial itself. How long did they sit in that jury box?

They are? Maybe they shouldn't have challenged everyone with a degree from an Ivy Luege school in the weeks long voir dire process.

That doesn't seem very hopeful for them.

I forgot to post this a couple of days ago (or whenever this story broke, damn my days are a blur), but NPR had a really good piece where they read from the documents used at trial, especially the ones with Cheney's notes on them.

Most telling was a letter drafted by Tenet where he drafts a response to the State of the Union claims of uranium in Iraq, and Cheney sends it back with one word scrawled on it: "Unsatisfactory". Smiley: lol They called him the most porwerful Veep in the history of the United States, and they weren't kidding.
