The clocks are disappearing from the nation's post offices.

It's no conspiracy or science fiction-inspired mystery, but a quietly executed program by the U.S. Postal Service to take down all timepieces from retail areas of the country's 37,000 post offices.

"Well, they've been removed," confirmed Stephen Seewoester, a Dallas spokesman for the Postal Service, which is an independent agency of the federal government's executive branch. "We want people to focus on postal service and not the clock."

Say goodbye to those pesky 1- and 2-cent stamps that used to clutter up desks and purses every time the price of mailing a letter went up.

A new "forever" stamp -- good for mailing a letter no matter how much rates rise -- was recommended Monday by the independent Postal Regulatory Commission. The panel also called for a 2-cent increase in first-class rates to 41 cents, a penny less than the post office had sought.
To be honest, I don't care about the postage rates because sending mail isn't exactly a hardship for me. I do find it amusing that a proposed increase in postage rates comes with hiding the clocks in the Post Offices so you won't see how long you've been waiting in line.

The official line is that the clocks were removed as a way of "standardizing" the offices. No explanation as to why they couldn't just get a standardized clock. A black rimmed office/kitchen clock'll run ya $7 at Target and never goes out of style.

I can't even remember the last time I waited in line at the post office. Don't most people have watches/cellphones/etc to check their own time with? Is this really news? Must have been a damn slow news day.

They removed the clock so people wouldn't be aware of how long they've waited in line, or so employees wouldn't keep taking those 15-min breaks every 30 min?

This strikes me as a shockingly bad idea for an organization who's mission is to remain revenue neutral forever.

They are just trying to get you to lose track of time and not realize how much time and money you've spent playing the stamp machines.

I have some tokens, but mine have a mouse on them. He's wearing a bow-tie, looks like.

And you probably put every bit of it right back into the machine. "Won" -- yeah right.

I thought it would be about dollars per hour worked.

The forever stamp just seems so convenient. They apparently loose money selling you 1 or 2 cent stamps.
