Getting new ram for my PC, got some questions.Follow

#1 Mar 02 2007 at 7:20 PM Rating: Decent
I'm by no mean computer or technologically illiterate, but I got some problems. My current RAM is 1 gig, with four slots in my tower and two of them being occupied by 512 DDR2-PC2-5100 sticks. So, I decided to upgrade and went to Crucial.com where I found the type of RAM my PC is compatible with. Now It listed to me all the compatible ram, and being not exactly sharp on these things I went about looking locally for stores that held that sort of ram. I could not find ram that exactly matched my own anywhere, so I purchased a 512 DDR2-PC3-4200 stick of ram, put it in, and the computer didn't start smoking so I was rather positive it was ok.

Then of course as I'm playing some games I can see the FPD rate go down. So I log onto World of Warcraft, turn the FPS on and am rather astonished when I see that it is at a steady absolute 30.0 FPS. I then turn on Vanguard to notice that there is absolutely no difference in the current performance than there was in my previous 1 gig venture into that games world.

Now, I realise my mistake after having spoken with many more technologically savy people. It turns out that the serial numbers on the ends of the RAM mean a lot more then I thought. It's the speed. So I purchased a stick of RAM that is compatible with my PC but runs slower, thus it's dragging my other two sticks down.

You think that Crucial would have made it clear after it's scan that although that's compatible with your PC it isn't compatible with your current RAM. :\

<- Sad panda.

Moving on, I guess I can hassle the people that I got it from who told me after purchasing it that there are no refunds and see if I can get an exhcange... Now there are no 5100 versions of RAM there, but there may very well potentially be RAM that is above 5100. My question is if that will be as much help as having a stick that's slower? :\

RAM has to match exactly, or else you risk a flaming meltdown. Get the same type (DDR2/PC2) and speed (5100). Or else just swap it *all* with something better.

Time to take the RAM out. :(

Do you think perhaps my previous RAM will be damaged from my mistake?
#5 Mar 02 2007 at 7:40 PM Rating: Decent

Actually, my FPS is now still the same laggy like thing in WoW. Around 30 and sometimes moving up. I'm starting wonder if perhaps I did in fact damage my original RAM!

Oh dear, did I? >_<

Just swap the slower sticks out with some faster ones. If you need to know which ones to get just ask here, link your computer model or if its a homebuilt, the motherboard and we'll let you know.

Well, I did some more digging Dread Lord and it turns out that either my original sticks are rare as hell or just not being made anymore. They are DD2 PC2-5100 and I can't find anything, not even on Crucial.com, that has 5100 RAM.

So if I do decide to keep going with my upgrade will I be required to get 5100 RAM or is it ok and acceptable to get 5300, 5300, etc.?

Would have to know the brand and model number of your computer or MOBO to be able to answer your question.

I had the same issue with my last MOBO, so saved the extra memory for the futher and now have been able to use it on current motherboard. But then I'm a packrat wo still has the 5 1/4 floppy drive from my first computer a Tandy 1000a.

If it will take 5100 it will take 53-5400. THe new ram will just clock down to the old ram speed. Or just buy this: http://www.shop.com/op/~512MB_PC23200_DDR2_240PIN_DIMM_DIMENSION_4700_4700C_5100_8400-prod-33041868-43153259?sourceid=298

Set the voltage and the timing in the bios manualy to crucial specs. This is 99% of the time a timing issue. Good luck.

the speed differance in ram is miniscule.

with vanguard, you need 2 gigs. i have a very good machine, a duel core 4200 amd with 2 gigs and the frame rate with vanguard goes from anywhere between 15 to 25 depending in the time of day and how many people are in my immediate proximity.

try 2 gigs. the differance between 533 and the others wont be noticiable, but buy the top end stuff if you want. i did, and it doesnt seem to do any better than the store bought machine i have with 533 in it.

after that, work on the video card and the processor. if you dont atleast have a duel core processor, thats where you need to start.

vanguard is really tough on machines. not to mention the memory leakes that cause you to crash every so often depending on how much ram you have, and other bugs they are working on.

its an awsome game, but it is not smooth by a long shot. that said, the release of EQ1 by the same people was worse.

Vanguard doesn't have dual core support. They did talk about it though, so maybe that magically makes it faster to use one.

:)

But but but what about the mystical ability to miraculously burn DVD's while playing Vanguard? IF you don't have dual cores how are you going to do that???

I always burn my critical data disks whilst playing computer games. It makes them cooler.

I find that burning DVDs while playing vanguard and updating WoW can cause my USBTV to be a bit choppy if my iPOD is synchronising, I'm backing up my slave HDD and installing an OS Upgrade at the same time.

If you don't have Dual Core, you will not be able to downlaod real large pron files during the lulls in the game.
