For the first time ever, I listened to an Orchestral soundtrack the same way I would a Bruch Concerto, a Mendelsohn Symphony or one of Mozart's Operas

The LoTR soundtrack works even without the movie.

OK - there are Movie Songs that stand up on their own (songs from Pretty Woman, About a Boy and any Tarantino Movie)

But are there any movies where you could play the soundtrack album start to finish and move into music heaven?

Schindler's list is an 'almost' (some of the largos and allegros don't work without the visuals)

Star Wars Episode IV (Mark 1) is close.

Recommendations?

My favourite is Pink Floyd, The Wall. I also really enjoyed the soundtrack to The Devil's Rejects.

Mind you, more in line with what you are looking for would be "The Hunt for Red October."

Not quite on the same lines as you but The Crow Soundtrack does it for me. Lost Boys too.

The Billy Elliot soundtrack is pretty good.

Also The Thomas Crown Affair (the new one) holds up pretty well.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou

I sing the Big Rock Candy Mountain to my baby when she is fussy, at times. It humors me to compare her life to the idealization of that of a hobo.

I really like the Swordfish soundtrack.

Also, Southpark: Bigger, Longer, Uncut will always be a classic.

The Little Mermaid, a sweeping carribean treat full of exotic sounds and uplifting lyrical content. Just right for sipping margaritas while sitting in a kiddie-pool on your living room floor.

I actually collect instrumental movie and computer game soundtracks. Here are a few of my favorites:

Das Boot
Vangelis, Conquest of Paridise
Crimson tide
The fifth Element soundtrack
Indiana Jones and the Last crusade
Jurrasic park
The opening theme to Men in black (I tend to like alot of Hanz zimmer and Danny Elfman music)
The Saint movie main theme
2001, obviously.
The Jaws theme
Mission Impossible II (Instrumental, not the crap release pop music one. Especially good are Nyah and Injection)
A few of the Starship troopers Instrumental tracks.
The Davy jones solo with the pipe organ from Pirates of the carribean 2

For game soundtracks,
Dungeon keeper II main theme
Command and conquer red alert
Homeworld II soundtrack (the entire ting is online free, though you have to hunt for the good ones)

plenty more where that came from too.

Almost anything Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Phillip Glass, Sylvestri... yeah, and I guess I'll throw Williams in there, but I tire of him easily.

Phillip Glass'
-Koyanasqatsi (sp?) Those movies are nothing but music and visuals anyway, but I think all of Glass's stuff holds up on it's own.
-The Fog of War is a favorite of mine.
-The Hours
-Some tracks from The Truman show aren't bad either, but they're not all glass... some cat by the name of Burkhard Dahlwitz collab'd with him.

-The score to Hero (the Jet Li Hero) isn't bad, but I don't think it totally survives without visuals. I forget the composers name... Tan Dun possibly?

-Cowboy Bebop is always nice and jazzy and I think makes it without the visuals, depending on which disk you're listening to.

-Michael Giacchino's score to the Medal of Honor series isn't bad either, but you'd have to arrange the tracks to get a nice long listen.

-Goldsmith's Star Trek stuff can be cool at times, and his score on The 13th Warrior was a lot of fun to listen to, that's one I come back to often.

-Eliot Goldenthal's HEAT score.

-Ocean's 12... which is a compilation (soundtrack) is fun sometimes, but not long enough. I didn't dig Ocean's 11 soundtrack as much.

-There are some good tracks off the Glory score that are good. That's James Horner.

-The Hudsucker proxy by Carter Burwell is great. Does well without the visuals.

-Of course most of Hanz Zimmer's stuff is a treat to listen to, but I've kind of worn him out. Most recently my favorite stuff from him was probably the Batman Begins score. The Thin Red Line has some decent tracks as well.

-Don't wanna forget Toto's Dune score

-Oh, and a little gem by Wang Chung... the score for To Live and Die in L.A. Trust me, it's nothing like "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight", it's very 80's sounding yes, but in a good way.

-The Bourne Identity score... the name of the artist escapes me right now. I wanna say Thomas Newman, but that's not right. Newman does the American Beauty stuff. Anyway, great score... very different take on the spy sound and this one definitely works without visuals.

I'll stop there... this could go on forever.
