I thought you were a female as well. Well grats to you and your SO on your new baby girl. Im very happy that the baby is ok after such a panicky beginning. I wish the very best of a recovery, both physically and emotionally to your SO. That being said, while you dont need to sue, definitely getting the word out so that others know, both in and out of the hospital is a good way to go. Not for vengence, but for knowledge. Mistakes can happen, but being carved up without the proper pain meds, and the pain meds being given potentially hurting your child is something that no one should ever go through. There are several nurses and doctors surrounding a woman in labor for a reason; to ensure the best medical care possible and to catch what another person may have missed. I would go to the top in the hospital and make an official complaint. It also does not hurt to see a lawyer and find out your rights on the off chance that long term health issues may pop up.

Research all avenues, but most of all, enjoy your new child, and be a strong support system for your woman. She will most definitely need it.

Hire a lawyer, and the kid will have the college fund already filled.

Being a parent here as well, be thankful for what you have. At least in canada your insurance company can't tell the hospital what to do.

When my twins were born, they were a month early and required time in the NICU. My insurance at the time felt that after 24 hours they didn't want to pay for NICU and told the hospital to take them out. All while not telling me a damn thing. Well, 4 hours later when they couldn't keep their temp up they placed them back in NICU and left them there for an additional 2 days and basically told the insurance company to get bent. In the end the kids were fine, but the insurance company ending up shelling out an additional 40k because of their own stupidity.

Congratulations again on being a father^^

The above story is why my wife refused to ever get any pain drugs until AFTER each baby was born. She delivered all 4 of our kids the natural way. God bless her pain tolerance. She is very strongly opposed to epidurals in particular.

I also had to have an emergency C-section due to long labor and the baby being distressed. I am *so* glad I didn't read this 5 years ago.

How heavily medicated was she during conception?

So she's 3 days old now. If you didn't apply for her place at Harvard yet, you left it too late.

Me too. I couldn't get past the part where I had to master passing a bowling ball through my seminal vesicle.

Congrats on a healthy little girl, and make sure to give mommy all the help you can as she recovers.

I was lucky to have all 3 of my girls with natural child birth. Last 2 they didn't have time to give me any drugs and they wouldn't have had time as both were born within 15 minutes of my arrival at the hospital. Catcher mitts would have been needed if I had any more kids. only unbearable moments came during the last 5 minutes when I wanted to just push the girls out.

My oldest has had 2 c-sections and during the post op of her first, I had to get on the nurses and doctors to make sure she got the pain medicines she needed. Granddaughter was born at another hospital and the difference of a non teaching hospital and one of the top medical schools in the nation, was great. Unless you may have need for a NICU, I wouldn't suggest going to a teaching hospital or military one to give birth.

I work at a teaching hospital, and I wouldn't ever consider one for my care. These students are careless morans.

Well we're home. The hospital has student nurses in the maternity ward (not the birthing suite). They basically just help out with the little things, so no concern there.

Baby and Mom are good. Baby sleeps all day and is up all night (of course). Mom's gone to get her staples out right now.

So all's good.

Tee-hee. I hum that song all the time here. Our facades are almost identical. This hospital was built in the 30s.

I won't sue becuase suing is purely monetary no matter what anyone tells you. You don't sue to get things changed, you sue to get money.

I respectfully disagree. That blanket statement only applies to some people, and I will tell you why it wouldn't apply to me.

This story got my blood up because I was imagining what your family went through and it just horrified me. I was visualizing the situation and how if this had happened to me, I'd have found out the responsible parties and come back to that hospital and introduced them to the working end of a baseball bat... But, once the temporary upsurge of hot anger cooled into a cold fury, I realized that instead of doing something that would make me into the bad guy, I'd sue the hell out of them instead. I want them to never, ever, even think about being this stupid or careless again without being terrified at the idea of what such incompetence will cost them. Whatever happens to them, I want it to be so bad that even the people around them become more careful - this type of thing should never happen, and it damn sure shouldn't happen to my family.

That's why I sue. *F* the money, the only thing it could do would be to help offset the costs of the suit as well as (hopefully) make things a little better for mom. Frankly, after the suffering she went through - if you win enough to pamper her (no pun intended), she deserves every cent.

Anyway, I can't tell you how sorry I am that this happened and how relieved I was to read that your child and your wife lived. You have my empathy.

Edit: Spelling.

I did natural child birth and I'll do it again. Well... naturalish. They induced me and one of the inducing types that they used hurt worse and much longer than the birth of my daughter did. That was entirely a different thing where the nurses forgot about me being in there, but maybe due to going through THAT hell, the birth wasn't so bad w/o an epidural. To get through the pain though, they had jacuzzi bathtubs. Water cushioned a lot of the pain.

Back to the topic at hand, I'm glad all is well and that you guys are home at last. Congratulations again on the birth of your daughter and enjoy your new little girl. So far with my daughter being just over 1yr, I'd have to say that I've never had so many enjoyable moments in my life as I have had in the past year with my daughter.

Pictures of the baby? I see your point for not wanting to sue, but damn they screwed up bad. I'd atleast write a nice long letter to the head of the hospital. Congrads on the munchkin. Hope mom and baby feel better soon!
