I expect to see it on St Patrick's day, as the theaters will be empty in Boston and I can shout at the screen like a crazy black person without my significant other complaining.

What about 300 makes you think it's a "yelling at the screen" kinda movie?

I yelled at the screen during "The English Patient".

"Oh no you dent try to land that plane there! Ohhhh you gonna get it now, burned face cracka!"

I said the same thing last time this trailer came up but it looks more like an advertisment for a computer game filled with CGI cut-sceens than like a movie.

It seems to be in every scene I have seen so I'm assuming the CGI look is intended much like in Sin City. If that's the case it shouldn't distract. I hope.

/nod

I think it's an intended stylized look. I really enjoyed the look in sin city. Some people really hated it but I'm kind of into the graphics field. I like to watch movies for their effects and cgi because I'm familiar with how it's done and some of the tricks of the trade they use to pull off complicated scenes.

It's based on Frank Millers graphic novel which is loosely based on the actual battle and is exagerated and altered with Frank's vision. I'm not expecting it to be historically acurate. I'll watch it for the style and effects alone.

They'll call it Castle Wolfenstein

This is on my short list of movies that I want to go see.

I don't have much in the way of expectations for it though, other than interesting visuals, and probably a few sweet action sequences. So I shouldn't be disappointed. I try to keep expectations low to avoid that, especially since so much garbage seems to get made with so much hype.

I didn't mind the look in Sin City because it looked like a stylized 'comic' type of thing. It was over the top and obvious what they were going for.

This just reminds me of that Final Fantasy movie that flopped horribly. I could very well be wrong -- all I've seen have been the trailers.

Are you talking about "The Spirits Within"? or Advent Children? Because AV did pretty well on DVD sales.

Either way, March 16th should prove any doubts about 300.

I liked that Final Fantasy movie. The story was bleah and I didn't really get into it. I just liked the cgi and the boundaries it was pushing at the time. Like I said I'll watch a movie purely for it's cgi and special effects. I've done some stuff and learned how they actually do it and what goes into it. Makes even boring movies a little more watchable.

Well, it's been 140ish years and I still haven't got to see my dream movie of a robot Licoln versus a giant stone Robert E. Lee.

They did that in South Park.

That reminds me, I still haven't seen AC. Was it good?

I thought it was damn good. Matter of opinion though, it sways heavily on that film.

The FF movie was all CGI right down to the characters. It was nothing more than a fancy cartoon. Sin City used a lot of CGI to create the stylized comic book mood. I'm hoping all the CGI in 300 is there for mood and atmosphere (and some of the harder to do special effects) and not just a great big "we didn't want to pay anyone to do stunt work or old school FX " ****.

Is that a reference to that Will Smith Wild West movie?

I meant The Spirits Within. I've heard of the other one but don't think it ever saw a theatrical release.

Anyway, my upshot is just that it looked fake. For Sin City, that was fine because it was supposed to look fake in places and over the top. For this, it looks as if its being presented in the LOTR/Narnia mode of epic combat and looking fake seems (to me) to be counter-productive to the "wow!" factor of seeing massive armies clashing. My opinion on it anyway. Maybe if I was familiar with the comic, I'd feel differently but I assume most audiences won't be.

I'm not familiar with the comic, but I like pretty things. Rodrigo Santoro is definitely a pretty thing.

Eh, I don't know... I think that the majority of the audience will be fans of Miller's work and they would bring others (that aren't familiar) with them. THe rest will take care by word of mouth.

Oh, and The Spirits Within was groundbreaking as far as CGI work goes.

10 times as many people have seen Sin City than would even recognize Miller's name. Most people seeing it won't have any idea who he is.

This is true, but I'm fairly sure that it had to do with alot of word of mouth. I don't recall being blasted with too much media about it, generally speaking from an oblivious consumer, not a fan of course.

I stopped reading Miller around the time of "Give Me Liberty". I didn't realize he was even involved with Sin City until I saw it, but I remember about 100 ads that made me want to see it.
