ACtually, they made herb illegal a little more than 50 years ago because they needed some other way to demonize the Mexicans that were crossing the border..Smiley: mad

We didn't attempt to annex northeastern Mexico in 1848 partially because we didn't want a giant Catholic voting bloc introduced into the United States!

Also because it was associated with jazz, and you know how vile and corrupting music can be.

(Why are Baptists violently opposed to recreational sex? Because it may lead to dancing.)

Did you miss the disclaimer?

I still think that "nation states" are obsolete and are the bane of the world

This means a whole lot to me, however unrealistic and utopian it seems. Most people seem to throw away any hopefull ideas simply because it seems unacheivable in their life times... this is a blunder. I feel that by at least proliferating a certain idealogy or at least emmolating it, no matter how futile the effort may seem, will have more of a potential to bare fruit somewhere down the road... like the butterfly effect through time.

Stop hating on me, I'm part Pollack.
I re-read the above a couple of times, thinking that the second or third time around it would make sense. Of course it was a lost cause the moment I attempted it, but I figured I'd give you the benefit of the doubt, because you're all deep and whatnot.

I'd love to address your point, except I'm more convinced than ever that you didn't have one. You remind me of this guy I knew once, who loved to throw out hot-button comments so he could have philosophical discussions and would flip the table whenever his view was confronted because he didn't want to have to defend it, didn't think he needed to, said all argument was fruitless in the end, whatever, you name it.

I'm not offended by you (hell, I've heard much worse, and more personal), but what I am is tired of people that won't outright admit their prejudices and stereotypes. You had a commitment in your early post---you said a racist thing. It was a great example of such a comment, I pointed it out, and you couldn't, didn't, or won't stand by it. Shame, insecurity, outright denial? I don't care, I just don't want you playing off my ability to commit to an opinion as anger. I'm totally neutral on the immigration issue, actually. It affects me only peripherally.

Wow. $15k wasted just like that.

No one was offering anyone free school.

Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown (D) and his wife, Patricia Arzuaga rallied the crowd gathered on Lawyers Mall, speaking in English and Spanish. "My father came from Jamaica," Brown said. "My parents found in this country a land of opportunity, founded on a good education." He said he and O'Malley (D) support a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition at community colleges and state universities. The crowd roared.

Second post by the OP.

Care to explain why you choose my post? When I was commenting on what the OP had wrote.

I don't mind that we establish a way for free tuition for illegals. Heres the the thing though it should be equal. Every person has a right to an education and alot of people can't afford it or go into debt. If they are going to do free tuition for some it should be for all.

Because, unless Maryland gives away free tuition to in-state residents, then it's not "free school". Particularly since the students have to prove that they graduated from a Maryland high school, thus proving their time spent in the state. Which is the same deal anyone gets -- you want in-state tuition in Maryland, go move to Maryland for eight months and apply for school.

From my undestanding that was the idea legaslature was trying to lean towards. Giving free tuition to the illegals who graduated from a maryland highschool. I don't understand how that can not be considered free schooling.

From readin the first article about this topic, I thought the senator or whoever mentioned only Latino's and Asians.

Receiving "In-state tuition" refers to paying state resident tuition fees as opposed to paying out-of-state fees which are typically several times more. It does not refer to giving away free tuition.

The deal is contingent upon the student proving that they graduated from a Maryland high school, a task which requires a certain time commitment of its own. So, as I said, it's ultimately the same deal anyone else gets; if you move to a state and live there long enough, you qualify for in-state tuition. And, unlike the arguments about illegal immigrants and social services, the ones who take up Maryland on this offer still have to pay the base tuition (less any financial aid or scholarships).

If you can find anything saying that the entire tuition itself would be waived, have at it.
