I'm gay. I can't say I'm proud or ashamed of that fact. I guess when they were picking poofs, my number came up. It's not something I'm responsible for, so why should I be proud or ashamed? I'm proud of the fact that I type over a hundred words per minute. That's something I trained for, worked for, took classes and courses for. It's something I deserve to be proud of, because it's something I did. Being born white, or with red hair or blue eyes, being born gay or male or with ten fingers and ten toes, those aren't things I DID. They're things I AM.

But see, there's a difference between being proud of something, and having "minority pride". Minority pride is embracing the unique thing that makes you different from the majority, even if that difference is a source of some sort of discrimination or oppression BY the majority. It's a way of standing up and saying "You don't like me because I was born the way I was born? Tough ****." So I see no problems with people feeling "minority pride". I don't very often, personally, but that's because other **** annoy me. Other humans annoy me for that matter, which is why you'll never see me wearing a t-shirt that says "Human and proud of it!" But I can understand why it's important to claim your uniqueness and own it, especially when so often the world looks down on you for it.

EDIT: When did they fix the language filter?

There's a lot of racism towards white people.

Shut the **** up you pathetic entitled ignorant cracker.

White people aren't even the majority worldwide

They aren't? When did this **** happen? Oh yeah, the entire history of the world.

and it's been projected that before too long they will be the minority in America as well (though the numbers aren't everything; financial and political power are large parts of this as well). A lot of the racism towards white people is that they are the majority and as such some people will readily assume that they are racially insensitive, have little or no grounds for empathy, or are just plain racist pricks.

White people *are* racists. All of them. If you have white skin, you hate black people, it's that simple.

No, it's not right, but people who identify themselves as a minority are always going to feel surpressed by what they identify as the majority, even if the actual majority isn't paying any attention to what makes that person a minority or is even makes efforts to accomodate them.

We won't know if that's true unless it happens someday.

It's not necessarily a reality so much as a state of mind in many cases. Particularly with many young people who have never experienced real racism, they can become offended by what they think is racism when it's actually nothing of the sort.

Wrong, the only young people not experiencing racism are white ones.

There are a lot of existing double standards though, such as BET (what if there was a WET?)

There is, it's just named CBS.

, black organizations and ceremonies. Generally the public accepts this because they view these groups as disadvantaged and as needing or deserving these tools to keep on their feet. I personally think it's a step back and only serves to further segregate the country (seriously, minorities complain frequently about exclusion but have no reservation about segregating themselves... that's not referring to any particular group; just your basic human ignorance), but I can't force someone to consider themself a part of "my group".

That's because you are a rock stupid white person. Of course you think racist things, it's really not your fault, you can't help it. You're white *and* mind numbingly stupid. I'd be worried, but some smart Asian kid will trick you out off all your money and you'll become homeless and die on your own soon enough, I guess.

Smasharoo, I admittedly don't know you so I'm going to err on the side of you being facetious, rather than stupid. Just in case...

Quote:

I'm white, and I don't. I certainly don't like all black people, but then there are a hell of a lot of white people I don't like either.

Quote:
Wrong, the only young people not experiencing racism are white ones.

Since you have automatically stereotyped all white people, including the young ones, racists, then you have yourself made them victims of racism.

Quote:
There is, it's just named CBS.

The point is the name. If it were actually called White Entertainment Television, there would be an uproar, because it would be sending the message that white people enjoy this kind of programming whereas black people won't enjoy it as much, yet there's that double standard. BET is clearly directed towards black people... not necessarily in the programming but in the name itself. Isn't it implying that just because I'm white I won't like Def Jam?

I'm white, and I don't. I certainly don't like all black people, but then there are a hell of a lot of white people I don't like either.

You hate all black people. You're just lying about it because you feel bad about it sometimes. It makes you uncomfortable to touch them, and you probably lock your doors if you see more than one on the street.

Since you have automatically stereotyped all white people, including the young ones, racists, then you have yourself made them victims of racism.

Of course I haven't. I haven't said they hate black people *because* they are white, I've merely observed that all white people hate black people. 'All black people will die someday' isn't racist is it? It's simply stating a fact.

The point is the name. If it were actually called White Entertainment Television, there would be an uproar, because it would be sending the message that white people enjoy this kind of programming whereas black people won't enjoy it as much, yet there's that double standard.

It's not a double standard because the two sides aren't otherwise equal. See, it's a double standard when you fine CBS for showing 'Amos and Andy' reruns but you don't fine BET, but that's not the case here. You have one vastly more powerful super wealthy side that controls nearly all media outlets. That side is controlled by white people, who as we've established hate all black people. BET has to choose their name simply to identify that it's a channel not run by people who hate black people. Granted, they could have called it 'The Showtime at the Appolo Chanel' but we all know those Jew bastards who run Showtime would have sued them in a second.

BET is clearly directed towards black people... not necessarily in the programming but in the name itself. Isn't it implying that just because I'm white I won't like Def Jam?

Of course you'll like Def Jam, 20 something white people are the target demographic for Def Jam. It's more implying that you won't be buying much Magic Shave.

I just before I prepare to respond to this calmly and rationally...

Seems fairly unlikely given recent experience.

It says that, if you enjoy black entertainment, you may well enjoy the programming they've collected. Much like, if you enjoy stuff about history, you'll enjoy the programming on the History channel or, if you enjoy sitting at home and buying crap made of Diamondique, you'll enjoy the Home Shopping Channel.

No one at BET is saying that crackers aren't allowed to watch their old reruns of "What's Happening?".

I am though. Crackers aren't allowed to watch old reruns of "What's Happening?".

"The Jeffersons" is allowed because of the interracial action with Lennie Kravitz' mom.

Isn't that still basically saying that, "black people find this kind of stuff entertaining," and based on what you've just said, you really think there would be no problem if there were a network named WET? It's still a racial generalization. There are many black people that don't like or watch BET and at least some white people that do.

My two best friends in high school were black (I haven't had hardly any friends since high school because I don't care much for most people). I've dated and worked for and with black women with no problems, and my neighbor was a black guy and he frequently had his friends over and they hung out outside my door (only a problem when it's late, but he moved out). On the large my experiences with black people have been more positive than with people of my own race. I'm not entirely sure at this point if you're serious or not, either (I don't especially care).

The same thing always bothered me as the OP. I could care less what colour you are, but don't call me racist when I make the same jokes as you (as an example, and not a very good one I know).

What REALLY bugs me is the gay pride crap. I don't care if you're gay, do whatever the heck you want. My problem is when you throw a damn parade with people kissing each other half dressed etc. You shut down part of the city so you can drive floats down the street making soft **** for all to see. THEN they televise it. It's just bad taste, sorry, no other way to put it. I'm not prudish by any means, quite frankly you could start going at it on a park bench and I wouldn't care, I don't have to watch it. It's kind of hard to avoid your stupid gay parade that's on EVERY channel and snakeing (bad pun intended) it's way through the city streets. You don't need a damn parade to ***** your boyfriend.

I think that, given that 95% of the programming on TV is already Anglo-oriented, people would question your motives in creating a channel exclusively around white programming whereas the idea of collecting black prgramming into a single channel more easily stands on its own.

Can you think of a better reason to create a "WET" apart from "'Cause them black folk get BET"?

Not really thinking about it because I see no reason for the name BET so I really can't justify a WET. Does it really need to be called Black Entertainment Television? That just seems to be reinforcing the stereotypes on both ends.

Ultimately it's just a name and is far from the top of my list of societal concerns, but it is a double standard (for some people). My point is that if black people try to remain segregated from white people they seem to have society's blessing, whereas the other way around it's racism. I understand why that is, but that doesn't make me think it's right.

I'm sorry that the only friends you could find were people you hate because of the color of their skin. It was nice of them not to mind that you were afraid to touch them and to answer your questions about their tails.

I've dated and worked for and with black women with no problems, and my neighbor was a black guy and he frequently had his friends over and they hung out outside my door (only a problem when it's late, but he moved out).

'They' always do that, don't 'they'?

On the large my experiences with black people have been more positive than with people of my own race. I'm not entirely sure at this point if you're serious or not, either (I don't especially care).

I'm sure your experiences with them are great. You should take lots of pictures so you can show your amazed white friends how brave and open minded you are. I'm also sure you, as all white people do, hate black people. It's really ok, it's not your fault, it's just that you're white. I imagine you probably don't like collard greens, either.

In that case you are quite an amazing individual to be able to know what's in the minds of every white person in the world. :p I could claim that too, but people would know I was actually being a racist.

Well, of course, you're white. Obviously you're racist. It's just genetics, there's nothing you can do about it.

An example of you hating something because it's related to black people? Clearly. Case closed, Imperial Cyclops.
