So I bought this very expensive high end quad video liquid cooled ALX system from Alienware last spring. One concern I had when looking at it was that cutting edge technology is both more likely to break and also more difficult to find a person who can repair it when it does. But Alienware seemed to have that covered. They offered a warranty with guaranteed fast on site service. So I bought the extended warranty and got the machine.

Sure enough on Friday I had no video. I called their tech support and went through all the gyrations and he finally decided it was a bad video card. So I asked when a tech would show up to fix that. Not so fast, they don't do that for water cooled parts. I have to ship my whole computer to Miami and have it fixed there. But what about my on site service warranty? Well that doesn't apply to water cooled machines. But my machine was water cooled when I bought the warranty, isn't that a contradiction?

Basically I was deceived. They sold me a warranty and made me a promise that could never apply to the computer I was buying. Thus, I am out of a computer for whatever time it takes them to fix it and ship it back to me. Worse yet, because the possibility never occured to me that I could not get it fixed on site, I have not password protected anything on it, so whoever opens it up there can basically waltze through all my financial and business records with impunity.

I do have one consolation. I figure 90% of PC video game players play MMORPG's. These are Alienware's target market. All of those people visit our site. I think I may write up a review of Alienware telling people about this issue. I wonder how much their sales will be dropping this quarter?

Well, they'd have to check out bad reviews first.

That said, I think the unfortunate reality is that you'll have virtually no impact on their sales, but it's possible you could convince them otherwise to a degree that they'd give you a new tote bag or something.

Sorry about the computer, have Kao build you one next time.

Now in UK that would be unlawful and you could sue them for a bajillion pounds.

I suggest you seek legal advice Smiley: sly

Seriously. . Is what they did legal in the USA?

Almost certainly. I'm far too lazy to check, but I'd strongly suspect that somewhere in some large boilerplate agreement, it states they won't do on site for water cooled stuff or something vaguer to that effect.

Smash, we do 300 million page views a month and have over 10 million unique visitors a month. We're currently ranked no 837 in size among all sites of all languages in the world. I seriously doubt any site reaches more PC game players than we do. IGN/Gamestop probably reaches more gamers in general, but more console than PC. If we run a detailed review telling people to not buy Alienware, I guarantee that will affect their sales. I actually don't want to do it because I have preferred over the years to not rock the boat, but I do think this is a serious issue. Had I known the warranty did not cover most issued with my computer, I would not have bought it. So I may decide to not write something up simply because it can have such a significant impact upon this company. Something to sleep on.

Oh and yeah in the fine print of the warranty it says they can at their discretion not do the on site repair, so basically the warranty is worthless.

All due respect, I think you vastly overestimate your ability to effect people's hardware purchasing decisions.

If you disagree, as it appears you do, I think you'd be much better served starting a computer building operation specifically aimed at MMPORG gamers. Why waste all that influence?

:)

I had the same problem with my Sony MD player that I bought from Futureshop. They promised certain things in the warranty and when problems occurred they failed to deliver. I ranted about it here. I am sure it negatively effected their business, nothing to do with DRM and root kits!

Take that Sony.

I've wanted to do a hardware review section for a while now. Would be nice to review some of the new hardware from a MMORPG-centric perspective. That would be fun.

Yeah, I am not impressed with either Alienware's or Dell's customer service. Now that they're practically the same entity I don't see it improving.

As long as we're ********* my computer is finally on its deathbed, so to speak. I'm not too ticked since I bought it back in '01 and it was probably time, but I need to look into a cheap laptop as a replacement (My translation work usually works best mobile, and besides that I just download a lot of tunes and surf the 'net).

I was thinking Dell since we get a discount through work, but I loved my lil Gateway and it was good to me, so I may go back.

I stopped there, Alienware sucks ***. My cousin got one a few years ago and it crahses at least once every 3-4 months.

Anyway, is there a possibility you can get them on fraud?

edit: I personally love my sony vaio desktop computer. Got it about 4 or 5 years ago and i've never had a problem. Well, there was that one time where I got my computer to shutdown whenever I played ffxi along with having videos play in wmp. But that was fixed when I discovered I never once updated my video drivers.

A regular tech review section is a good idea. We're trying to expand out front page news and editorials and that would be a useful feature.
