The War in Iraq...soldier perspectiveFollow

I was just wondering...everyone seems like they are gun ho about bringing our troops back.

Why exactly is that? I mean it'd be nice to see my friends and family who are over there but I know that they have a duty to the country.

I'm going to be going into the Military myself and I know that when I join, I may be sent off to war with the possibility of dying.

But I don't have a problem with being sent where ever I'm told, I mean, I feel honored that I will get to serve my country.

The soldiers that I've talked to have told me that in their troop the people they have been with became like brothers to them and that they wouldn't want to leave their post unless everyone came back with them.

Two weeks ago I got to talk to one who liked being over there helping the Iraqi citizens. What I was told was good news about people getting help. Not something that I ever see on CNN. Its always the bad stuff, (usually twisted view), going on over there. I just can't think that the war over there has 100% negative connotation, to which the news and a majority of people make it out to be.

Good things are happening over there. From a Soldiers view: they are doing a duty to the United States, they knew what they were getting into when they signed, the ones I've talked to have no problem being sent over.

Whats your thoughts? From a Soldier Perspective.

I'm getting out of the military as I'm tired of fighting wars for rich Republicans that they themselves wouldn't send their own children to fight. After personally seeing first hand the effects of this so-called Iraq "war" is nothing more than a slaughter of Arabian 17 year olds and American men and women fighting a war Iraqi men and women should be fighting for themselves. Despite the fact that I am a Democrat, regardless I will not support this utter logistical failure of a war. I want Osama's head on a plate, not Saddam's. Yet my government has failed to produce that and furthermore has moved away from that goal.

To help people understand this chart:

O-*= Officer pay
W-*= Warrant officer Pay
E-*= Enlisted officer pay.

An E-1 makes $15,616.80 a year to get shot at.
An E-2 makes $17,376.00 a year to get shot at.
An E-3 makes $20,750.40 a year to get shot at.
An E-4 makes $24,753.60 a year to get shot at.
An E-5 makes $30,753.60 a year to get shot at.

See the trend, and this is max pay, most military members don't qualify for max pay and these figures are before taxes. Don't give me that sh*t that you pay taxes, the majority of you wouldn't accept this pay to get shot at much less do anything else. Granted there are special incentive pays but rarely do they peak over $150 dollars a month. This is what you Conservatives are paying young men and women to die in the field of Iraq. Oh, let me add the last pay raise was the smallest in 13 YEARS. Hell, even Clinton administration did better than that.

Oh, one more thing, I guarantee any employee of Halliburton is making 10x that in Iraq taking garbage out and not getting shot at. So take this war and shove it in your conservative righteous ***.

I apologize in advance for breaking the page.

Why exactly is that? I mean it'd be nice to see my friends and family who are over there but I know that they have a duty to the country.
---------------------------------------------------

duty to country,

yes, we all have that.

duty to change the world for the benifit of our country? thats what iraq is. a pissing contest about ideology.

not defending this country. not protecting our way of life as it is in no real danger of being taken from us. not protecting our allies, iraq was not a threat to anyone when we attacked.

wasted lives. senetor obama hit the nail on the head, even if you didnt want to hear it.

wasted human lives. wasted potential. wasted futures. human beings being destroyed over a pissing contest over ideology....and oil....

is that what you are signing up for? if you understand that, and agree to waste your life for it, fine. but the majority of our military did not.

over 3000 american soldiers, over 100,000 iraqi men women and children. WASTED. butchered for the benifit of a hand full of idiots who think the world should be as they dictate it should be. killed for no good reason. killed over a pissing contest from some wealthy people of power who NEVER SERVED in our military, and NEVER SENT THIER KIDS to be wasted for THEIR whims.

famileys destroyed. homes destroyed. an entire country decimated.

we did this.

why? not to protect this country, that was a lie fed to you to make you do what you were told to do. not to protect our way of life, no one can take that away from us.

why?

evil is as evil does.

Let me give you a soldiers input, as a vet that served in Afghanistan and Iraq, and as a civilian that has spent time in Iraq.

Our men and women are forced to fight a battle with their hands tied. The rules for engagement are so limiting that they are not able to do the job of securing the country properly. How would you like to go to school (for example) and have your assignments given as chapters and pages written on a blackboard, but no text to study from. You will fail every test you take. Our soldiers, Marines, sailors, and airmen that are on the groud in the sandbox are doing a bang up job, however, they're not able to complete their mission thanks to the current goverment. This is the fault of every member of the federal government, from the president to Congress. Blame them all.

I made more money, and more freedom to engage the enemy as a civilian "contractor". I was able to send bullets downrange far sooner, and far more often, than any military fireteam.

In this light, it's easy to understand why people want their men and women to come home. For me, it has nothing to do with politics. We're attempting to complete a task that our "leaders" have made neigh impossible thanks to constant leadership changes, and limiting the ability of the boots on the groud to engage the enemy. In short, they are sitting ducks, no matter how much good they do, they'll never be able to complete the mission. That's the problem. This is all forgetting the centuries old hatreds and disputes between tribes and rival factions.

Either bring 'em home, or let them have full reign to complete the mission by taking the 'cuffs off the soldiers and Marines, and allow them to engage at the first sign of trouble. There is your soldier's perspective.

That's what the OP asked for. For soldiers to reply to this thread. And we've gotten some. It's very good to hear opinions straight from the men and women going through it all, and I thank you. Your views will certainly colour what I say and how I act whenever I get a chance to talk about this war or vote over it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

agree.

either fight a WAR, or get out. either go in and kill EVERYONE, that is what war is all about, or get the hell out. short of that, there can be no victory, because 1000 years of history has shown us the people in the middle east will KEEP COMMING untill the last one is dead.

as far as your " soldiers perspective", you are a little short sighted. the rules of enguagement will not detemine this wars outcome. it is a war of ideology. one that the muslim people will die to protect. you will have to kill them all to win. anything short of that will result in a continued hit and run warfare for decades. they will not stop untill they run out of people. you cant intimidate someone willing to die for that they believe in. you can not pacify them into compliance.

you can only kill them, or learn to live with them. end of story.

either go to WAR, or get out.

it would be better to let them unite, get a really big army together, then provoke them into attacking us in force. THEN we can go to WAR. then we can win. then we can unleash our military from political restrains and let them do what they were trained to do. kill.

anything short of that is a body swappinng pissing contest we should have no part in. let the politicains go and inforce their agenda of they want. bunt dont involve the U.S. military untill they are willing to GO TO WAR, and all that it implies.
