The study concluded that women who ate more than 340 grams a week of fish or seafood -- the equivalent of two or three servings a week -- had smarter children with better developmental skills.

Children whose mothers ate no seafood were 48 per cent more likely to have a low verbal IQ score, compared with children whose mothers ate high amounts of seafood, the researchers found.

The study, led by Dr. Joseph Hibbeln of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, tracked the eating habits of 11,875 pregnant women in Bristol, Britain.

At 32 weeks into their pregnancy, the women were asked to fill out a seafood consumption questionnaire. They were sent questionnaires four more times during their pregnancy, and then up to eight years after the birth of their child.

Researchers examined the children's social and communication skills, their hand-eye co-ordination, and their IQ levels. They concluded that fish in a mother's diet did affect their children's development.

Oh noes, what to do now!! Maybe eat fishes, but no vaccines, and rub the kids head with mercury twice a week but don't let them use an Etch a Sketch.

This is why I leave my child to forage for himself in the yard. That way, I can wash my hands of the whole "Did I feed my child the right things?" dilemma. If he makes himself stupid eating poisonous berries, that's his own damned fault.

Edit: Poisonous berries made me make typos

I just feed my baby smarter babies...that way it works out that she's getting smarter and also eliminating the competition.

Efficiency is key.

When I get pregnant, I plan to ignore medical advice alltogether and just squat in a field. That way, they come out indestructible.

Meh. Any preggers lady who has read up enough on this knows that you are only restricted from eating certain types of mercury heavy fish that live on the bottom of the sea. I see nothing in that article specifying what kind of fish these women with little geniuses ate while pregnant so I don't see how they can make the blanket statement that eating "fish" is beneficial to your child's IQ when there's supposedly a big difference between eating swordfish and eating salmon. I was told I could eat all the salmon I wanted to provided it was wild and not farmed, but that I should not eat more than one meal per week of mahimahi.

I get the feeling that people who eat fish regularly tend to be smarter anyway, Long John Silver's aside.

I had a roommate in college who'd drink glasses of vodka with goldfish in them.

Probably not what you're talking about though.

I tend to eat a serving or two of tuna a week; then people yell at me for anything from mercury poisoning to dolphin killing.

The crackers or live fish?

I guess swimming in vodka it wouldn't technically be "live." Nor swimming.

"Live" goldfish. Well, live until they took a vodka bath. I'm sure they were in some stunned-pickled state at the time of consumption.

If only tuna could perform tricks...they'd be that much more delicious.

I guess swallowing a drunken goldfish is somewhat more humane.

Epigenetics at work. They recently discovered that epigenetics play a larger role in hereditary disease then your actual genetics do...

In other words: Mothers Diet > Gene pool... Food for thought. The source of this was mostly based around hereditary disease.

Most likly due to the fact that: Perspective > IQ. You could have a brilliant child, but raise him the wrong way and he will still grow up to be a dumbfuck... or at least act like one his whole life.

I wouldn't worry about most of it though, save for fast food. I'm still horrified they call it food.

As for salmon, canned salmon is one the most mercury potent fish you can buy, where as wild salmon has one of the lowest concentrations of mercury out of any fish.

BTW, here is the link to the article that first introduced me to epigenetics, entitled: DNA Is Not Destiny.

So that's a thumbs up to the goldfish & vodka cocktail for pregnant women?

I don't even understand how to eat canned salmon. I bought one years ago and all the bones were in it, cracked up and mixed around. Was I supposed to eat them?

My impression is that it is well known that it is certain numbered omega-x fatty acids which are critical for brain development. Thus one could take the pills and avoid mercury.

That said, my understanding is also that virtually any fish - even those reputed to be "high" in mercury levels are better then none. To the degree to which studies of people who regularly eat a diet of fish which contains high mercury fish are still better off eating the fish, as far as childhood brain development goes.

Needless to say, avoiding mercury is good, so given all fish, selecting lower mercury prone fish is better. I would, except that the sources I've looked at for information on this topic don't agree.
