Are you still mad that I turned you down so long ago? I can't be expected to consider the feelings of evey woman who gets wet in my presence.

Great Danes don't live very long. In this instance that's probably a mercy.

Seeing as my cat lived a nice 18 years, I'd say 10-12 is pretty short. (Even if i'm comparing different species.)

He was 6 years old in 2004 apparently, yet they fooled you into thinking he's 9 months.

What a steal, indeed.

Ten years is on the high side. The estimates I've seen are more like 6-10 years.

They're prone to orthopedic problems, of course; but also some types of cancer and cardiac and even kidney problems.

Nice dogs, though, the ones I've been around.

It's often like that with pure breed dogs. In fact, pure breeding is very un-natural, and causes lots of health problems for dogs.

I had 3 German shaperds when I was a kid in the South of France. They were the coolest dogs in the world, but they all had serious health problems around the age of 10: their back legs couldn't suport their backs, and so they became slow, had problems running, slept half of the day.

It was incredibly sad.

I love dogs.

Well, you got 7 or 8 years until he passes away. The better the breed, the quicker he will degenerate, unfortunately.

Pure breeds are chock full of full of problems. Dachscands have poor backs, Dalmations go mental, Bull Dogs can suffocate, I believe Chows have a life expectancy of five years.

Mutts live the longest.

I'm not much of a slobbery dog fan, which is one of the reasons that we have greyhounds.

btw Dog > Cat

Have fun when your houses burn down and your cat runs away. Or as far away as it can get inside a burning house without an escape. Mmmmm bbqkitten

Aside from the dingo, each is its own species which can freely inter-breed within its species as opposed to narrowing down breeding to a very defined subclass of Canis familiaris. Even dingos have unrestricted breeding within their population, allowing for genetic diversity. Of course, dingos also breed unrestrictedly with the rest of Canis familiaris so the breed is slowly wiping itself in regards to purity.

The problem with breeding as such is that such a small pool of animals is considered breedable. They have the "best" sampling of whatever arbitrary qualities are deemed desireable in a breed.

Collies now have needle noses and tulip ears, at the expense of hardiness and intelligence. (Ever seen a working collie? Totally, and I mean totally, different animal than the neurotic show dog.)

While responsible breeders breed to avoid known problems, they don't truly breed to promote genetic diverity and therefore species health. They would, I'm sure, if they had a larger pool from which to draw.

That's why mutts, though of course they can have recessive genetic problems, are much more likely to be healthy overall.
