Watching this is professionally painful. The Muzzies have been getting SA-7s from North Korea and Iran as of late and has made going high a dangerous proposition.

Sea Knight gets shot down

From my perspective, the pilot enters autorotation about a minute too late which allows the aircraft to be fully engulfed in flames by the time they are about to land. I don't know what was below them that they couldn't land to initially, unless the pilot was attempting to see if the CH-46 was still flyable, but the delay causes the bird to burn completely.

Nasty things, shoulder fired missles. It was always a concern of mine when I was flying in the military.

Sounds bad. I'm glad I was a ground troop vs. being a pilot. I made several jumps, but most of them were high enough up that a simple shoulder fired rocket wouldn't have made it up that high.

I honestly felt a mixture of anger, fear, and utter sadness watching that video. The music really adds to the agony. It always sucks to see something like that happen, I think just they way I watch things adds on to it. I completely throw myself into the scene, so in the back of my mind I here shouting of commands to help the situation, the crackling of the fire, the initial explosion, everything, and it sends my heart rate up quite a bit.
Even though im at home, sitting on my couch right now, i think about how im joining the Coast gaurd pretty soon, and how I'll be deployed on a chopper frequently, and the whole idea of being shot down sucks, but to see it happen, and to put my self sub-conciously into the video, blows my mind away. I feel bad for the families that lose someone, and might actually see them die, i kinda have mixed feeling on having those videos out, i know you dont have to watch them, but if they are there, its kinda hard not too, im done rambling now....

Dude, you're joining the Coast Guard...the odds of you being shot down a worse than your chances of winning the lottery when you don't even buy a ticket. Stop worrying. Your odds of drowning are far higher, so make sure you can swim well.

It's been a hot topic lately on the flight boards I frequent, especially the military forums. The insurgents have been using machine guns around an ambush sites on the roofs of surrounding buildings with SA-7s interspersed for shooting the higher altitude gunships using diving fire. This way they cover the little birds coming in with the QRF with withering MG fire and suppress the covering aircraft with shoulder fired weapons.

Right now, the only option other than just gutting it out is to only fly at night since SA-7s have a limited field of view/acquisition. However, that doesn't do anything to help the guys on the ground during day missions.

It makes me wonder if the military is working on a more effective disco ball to spoof the missles. I know the guys who are working that region are sh1tting bricks since going low away from populated areas are the only safe zones to fly in.

Yikes. Makes me glad I'm not over there right now. I had given serious consideration to Blackwater, but decided that stuff is for the younger generation.

I'm suprised they aren't using apaches for escorts for the slower birds like the Chinook.

I wonder how much control he had after impact. it looks to me like the missile hit right near the rear landing gear, so that would have screwed hydraulic pressure to the swashplates in pretty short order. Not fun.

It's no worse than Pat Robertson saying God is on our side. Same mindset, in fact.
