With fine vintage wine, there are good years and bad years. if you have had a chance to sample good wine from various years, you'll come to find that you like some years better than others even if the grapes are essentially the same. I think the same goes for music. With the advent of wonderful things like XM radio, Maxtracks (Canadian digital music over satellite) and other niche channel based radio services, I found myself taking some time to analyze what era of music I liked the best in terms of listening music. By this I mean music that you can put on while working, driving, folding laundry, whatever.

I've come to the conclusion that I prefer early 90's music in various genres, but the magic number seems to be 1994. Anything in and around that year for release seems to do it for me. I like music from other generations, but this stuff tends to define my interest.

Have you ever thought about this and if so, what year would you say you tend to gravitate towards in musical interest?

I'll always have a fondness for 80's tunes because that's when I grew up. That doesn't mean I own 80's compilation albums though.

Not the point. If you had XM radio, would you most likely tune into the 80's channel?

For example, I know my wife would almost exclusively listen to the "Big Songs" channel, which features a lot of the 70s-80s ballads and mushy crap. I'd establish her musical year to be 1982.

Go play with your fleet or something. Yes, 1993 is good (list you provided not withstanding).

Perhaps occasionally. I listen to talk radio mostly.

Well, I'm a Libra. I can't choose just ONE.

If I have to I will say 1964, Jamaica.

I'm with Smasharoo. 1991 was the last peak year. Others include 1977 (I liked first grade a lot) and 1988.

Sadly, much as I'd like to pretend otherwise I can hear that entire song in my head now.

1991-1994 were all very good, it's sort of pointless to pin down a specific year since some albums were released in one year but the songs didn't become widespread hits until the next.

If I had to take one it would be 1979.

Talking Heads - Fear of Music
The Fall - Live at the Witch Trials and Dragnet
Gang of Four - Entertainment!
Buzzcocks - A Different Kind of Tension
The Clash - London Calling (very late 79, generally considered an 80 release)
The Damned - Machine Gun Ettiquette
The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Gary Numan - Replicas and The Pleasure Principle
Frank Zappa - Sheik Yerbouti
The Police - Outlandos D'amour and Regatta de Blanc
Magazine - Secondhand Daylight
Bowie - Lodger

That's just the first ones to pop in my head. Widen that window to include 78 and 80 and about half of my personal favorites would be there, and the 80 list would include a lot of fairly obscure albums.

94-95, I'd say. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, that whole Reality Bites vibe.

1998:

- France won the World Cup.
- I had my own flat in Paris.
- I had the year off.
- I was 18.

Good times, good times...

Cobain blew his head off in '94. I think he'd disagree that it was a good year :)

The again, that's what he wanted.

So maybe he would agree.

Especially after seeing the Nirvana "best of" CD being released.

1962

JFK is running the US, Charles DeGualle France. The Cuban Missile Crisis proves that negotiations vs military force can settle national differences. Dr. King makes amazing strides in the civil rights movement. Neptune aligns with Pluto.

Of course Rock and Roll was in it's infancy.

I was around, barely, to bear witness to it all, sort of.
