The position is second to the Presidency. I can see the value in being able to shuttle the office-holder to DC without having to stop. And I don't care if it's a Democrat or a Republican -- hell, had they asked me I would have said to give Hastert a plane capable of travelling coast to coast instead of basing it on where you get your newspaper delivered.

I think that the politicians should have to provide their own transport (we elected them to run the federal goverment, not take trips on our dime), but I feel that they should be protected at all times, you never know when another Hinkley will show up.
