and you nutz in california elected this b*tch;

Quote:
A congressional source said that Rep. John P. Murtha, chairman of House Appropriations subcommittee on defense, which controls the Pentagon's spending, has telephoned administration officials to urge them to give the speaker what she wants.
The congressional source said Pentagon officials complained that Mr. Murtha, Pennsylvania Democrat, is accusing them of sexism for not immediately heeding her request.
Megan E. Grote, Mr. Murtha's press secretary, said, "Mr. Murtha absolutely never said anything about being 'sexist.' We have no further comment."
Meanwhile, Republican Conference Chairman Adam Putnam of Florida said Mrs. Pelosi's request represents "an arrogance of office that just defies common sense" and called it "a major deviation from the previous speaker."
Minority Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri called it a "flying Lincoln Bedroom," and Rep. Patrick T. McHenry, North Carolina Republican, labeled the speaker's plane "Pelosi One."
"This is a bullet point to a larger value -- Pelosi's abuse of power continues," Mr. McHenry said yesterday. "It began when the speaker denied minority rights to Republicans, continued with her 'TunaGate' scandal, and now she's exploiting America's armed forces and taxpayers for her own personal convenience

Smiley: laugh I would be more upset if it wasn't something the rest of Congress felt entitled to. Hastert lived in IL, and that's a flight a smaller plane can make nonstop. If she asks for the lager plane because she wants to be able to get back and forth quickly due to her home state being accross the freaking country, big deal. It's not anything that hasn't been done.

Varass, either you're as dimwitted as ever or you would have noticed the article states that they determined lending Hastert the plane for official Republican party business was a mistake. The Speaker of the House duties are disticntly separate, and he did make use of a smaller plane for this purpose.

I'd compliment you on the attempt, but it was as paltry as ever.

Yeah, because Congress can't even get a worthless, non-binding resolution passed through saying "We don't like Bush's plan but we're not going to do anything about it" but they're suddenly going to pass a budget hacking military spending until Pelosi gets an airplane.

She ought to ask for a pony while she's at it.

Pelosi said she would be happy to fly on commercial airliners but said the House sergeant-at-arms office urged her to continue Hastert's practice of using Air Force transport. She said she was informed on her first trip home that her plane would not make it across the country.

The House Sergeant at Arms wrote:
February 8, 2007

As the Sergeant at Arms, I have the responsibility to ensure the security of the members of the House of Representatives, to include the Speaker of the House. The Speaker requires additional precautions due to her responsibilities as the leader of the House and her Constitutional position as second in the line of succession to the presidency.

In a post 9/11 threat environment, it is reasonable and prudent to provide military aircraft to the Speaker for official travel between Washington and her district. The practice began with Speaker Hastert and I have recommended that it continue with Speaker Pelosi. The fact that Speaker Pelosi lives in California compelled me to request an aircraft that is capable of making non-stop flights for security purposes, unless such an aircraft is unavailable. This will ensure communications capabilities and also enhance security. I made the recommendation to use military aircraft based upon the need to provide necessary levels of security for ranking national leaders, such as the Speaker. I regret that an issue that is exclusively considered and decided in a security context has evolved into a political issue.
Well, Mr. Livingood, you need to understand that the Republicans are the minority party now and some of them aren't taking it real well. Trying to make a tempest in a teapot right now is about all they've got.

Meh. She said she's willing to travel commerically (I don't know if that means 'buy her own ticket' but it's still cheaper than a dedicated flight) but the House Sergeant at Arms wants her to fly on an Air Force flight, just as Hastert did after 9/11. The difference being that Hastert lives several thousand miles closer to DC than Pelosi does and, therefore, the same plane can't make the same trip without refueling.

The position is second to the Presidency. I can see the value in being able to shuttle the office-holder to DC without having to stop. And I don't care if it's a Democrat or a Republican -- hell, had they asked me I would have said to give Hastert a plane capable of travelling coast to coast instead of basing it on where you get your newspaper delivered.
