New government figures show a surprising increase in youth suicides after a decade of decline.

Suicides climbed 18 percent from 2003 to 2004 for Americans younger than 20, to 1,985 deaths from 1,737.

By contrast, the suicide rate among 15- to 19-year-olds had fallen to 7.3 per 100,000 in 2003 from about 11 per 100,000 in 1990.

Suicides were the only cause of death that increased for youths through age 19 from 2003 to 2004, according to the report released Monday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The mighty Ross Noble (google ******** has a theory that Pigeons, Goths and Emos are descended from the same genetic root, as they always congregate in the same place in town centres and malls.

He also plans to find a sleeping Goth and secretly hook it up to a dialysis machine so it wakes up all pink and healthy looking Smiley: lol

On a more serious note, I do wonder about the root cause of the problem. I suspect it has a lot to do with the modern family, in which achievement seems to be the measure of value.

I read an article a couple of weeks ago about a teenager who committed suicide and what a tremendous shock it was to everyone who knew him, etc. - and toward the bottom someone mentioned that he'd also attempted suicide a couple of years earlier. Wow, yeah, shocker.

If I had to hypothesize, I would look into what seem to be current isolating factors. Has anything dramatic occurred to make these kids feel like externalizing their issues is pointless?

Yeah, I guess that's what I'm wondering. Is this truly a trend due to social isolation from a young age (the television as babysitter theory)? Is there some other factor or set of factors in common?

Or is each case truly unique and it's all just a big coincidence?

I was thinking about this earlier, and it occurred to me that there is a trend toward convenience and speed that's been getting stronger over time, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of these kids are just less patient with themselves and their development. They could be thinking if something isn't fixed right away, it will never be fixed. This could also account for other forms of self-abusive and self-mutilating behaviors. Just a thought.

I'm not going to speualte on why these kids commited suicide.

However, I do hope Catholics are wrong, cos if they're not, Hell is going to "suck" a lot more than this Earth for those poor little emo kids.

I think perhaps isolation and not having a good support system for these kids may be a major cause.

I have a 13 year old daughter and everything in her life is drama.

Her boyfriend got grounded and she couldn't see him for 2 weeks. (She cried for an entire day).

Her best friend just moved 20 minutes away. (Huge hissy fit and yep more crying).

I spend hours talking to her and letting her vent at me but perhaps these other kids don't have that outlet so everything seems hopeless?

I have nothing to back any of this but mothers intuition.

Of course these kids feel isolated; their parents raise them on daycare and Dora. Parents are 'too busy' these days to actually raise their children. Couple that with the inability to lay down well-deserved beatings, and you have a generation of kids who have to raise themselves.

Depression among teens is complete ********* They just think they're depressed. I'd like to see them deal with more adult problems and then see how "depressed" they are.

It probably doesn't help that bands like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte help to make depression seem cool and that all teens have to look forward to is a life of ****.

I blame society for youth suicide.

Also, depression isn't "deep", lyrics and poems that reflect depression(true depression that is) are deep.
