Vista Premium here. Loving it so far.

You are the target demographic. They could have release 3.11 and named it Vista and your post would be identical.

An update

Turns out the keyboard issues I was experiancing were related to the hauppage tv tuner card I had installed for the mot part. there are still some other issues related to the motherboard, but that was by far the most annoying one.

Patches have really helped streamline vista over the last 3 weeks. There are still issues, some fairly annoying, but most of the initial slowness is resolved. I'd still advise waiting for SP1.

Singall. As long as Window's continues to merge the user and system space within their OS, no amount of patches, warnings, or other ridiculous "security systems", will ever really work.

The problem is institutionalized at a very low level. And it was something that MS choose to do deliberately. Waaaaay back in 1995 (technically a bit earlier), they were using their licensing agreements with "windows" to great effect. However, they were being threatened by other OSes that could run windows on top of their systems, potentially costing them full control of both OS and user environment.

Their response was Win95 (and everything since), which deliberately blended the user environment and OS interworkings in such a way that they could not be separated. Thus, you could not run Windows on top of another OS and have it work. That was by design. The downside is that this means that every single application that runs on Windows must run in a way that explicitly interacts with the core OS. This is required because if there was a full abstraction layer, you could simply port the layer to any OS and not need to run MS's product. It's why you can't really separate the user and admin space in Windows. It's why it's almost impossible to write an application for windows that does not require that one at least run the install with admin priviledges, and in many cases must be run in that mode period.

For those of us coming from a Unix backround the entire thing is riduclous to the extreme. I know for a fact that software can be installed and run without needing to *ever* grant the user administrative rights to the system. If the system is built to allow it. Windows is not. And as long as it is not, you will never be able to make those systems secure.

I finally ignored my own advice and gave in Smiley: frown

Installation was easy enough and everything detected OK.

All peripherals OK. My only glitch was spending half of last night recovering from Bluescreens with my TV Card disagreeing with the Video Card. Turns out the Hauppauge drivers I was using had 2 variants - 1 for the Hauppauge viewer and 1 for integration with Media Centre. Once I tried the latter it's A1, and the Electronic Programme Guide is inky-moomy. Smiley: clap

As for the look and feel - love it. Not found any of my apps that have compatibility problems.

gbaji is right - Since Win95 you hand over complete control of the system to MS, but for what I use this machine for (gaming and pissing about) I'm fine with that.

If I were still running mail and web servers and relating SQL databases I'd probably still be going with Linux

I ran into my first vista hardware landmine today. I never ran the Vista compatability tool on the main computer because i figured that all the components in it are more up to date than the secondary computer. Unfortunatly, what I didn't catch on the secondary computer is that the Hp Photosmart 1315 printer attached to the main and shared, is not vista compatable, and will not be. Now I know I may be accused of upgradeing hardware at the drop of a hat, and rightly so, but I absolutly HATE upgradeing printers. If it doesn't make the computer run quieter, look better, or run faster, it doesn't get upgraded. I was expecting to use this particular printer for another 2 years at the least. So yeah, somewhat annoying.

You're not the only one having issues with printers and vista. Lexmark all in one that is less than a year old will not work with Vista. Actually, I take that back, I downloaded a driver that I can print, but I cant scan, fax or anything else. I'm a little pissed. Oh well, I bought it at a miss-marked price. I paid $16 instead of $60.

You realize you basically paid $150 for a giant copper heat pump that barely works?

I water cool. I didn't buy the board for the heat pipe. I bought it for the Vista compatability and ram clock speed support for phase 2 of the upgrade, and the 680i chipset support.

Still, the heatpipe isn't that bad if you have decent air cooling. "Barely" really isn't fair to the board engineers.

There is far more to this Motherboard then just a ****** heatsink. First it has its hardware install mode. Which is I personally believe should have happened along time ago. 3 PCI-E 16x slots. For that infamous PCIE Physix card and alot of love LCD Post is awesome 6 SATA3 ports This baby is hawt hawt hawt then again I don't think it's worth 350 bucks :) But Sweeeeet ether way
