Like what? afaik, it's just a new GUI for XP.

Does it have that installation limit that Singnall mentioned sometime ago? (Don't ask me to look that up, I don't feel like sorting through his whole post count.)

Essentially. It's a slower version of XP with less flexibility. Sure it's much slower, but the windows do 3d flips now!

The important thing is that it's pretty.

I was supposed to get free Vista when it came out since I bought an Alienware, damn do I have to call them AGAIN?!?!?

If the computer wasn't so good, I would have never purchased it from them, they suck. Alienware computer good, customer service B A D. (and they are stupid!)

Some vista notes:
Boot time is slightly faster on Vista than with XP. We are talking a few seconds, nothing major.
Simple operations, such as copying a very small file, for some reason take longer on vista than they do on XP.
Installing Vista takes an assload of time. That was just the secondary computer, but it's a 3.4ghz so it's not all that slow. When the little window comes up on the bottom stateing "installation may take several hours" believe it.
The upgrade process sucks for doing a clean install. You can't just stick the disk in for XP, provide the code, and go. Nooo, you have to install xp all the way to the point where you have network, Activate it, then install vista which does have a clean install option at that point, but its a ******* waste of time.
The shortcut icon arrows are frigging huge! There is a third party fix for this, but thats kind of the point. You shouldn't need a third party fix to fix that.
The network stack, though slightly less secure at the moment, is faster. They did manage to make the home networking without a domaoin controller setup more stable. which is good. Not everyone has a domain server.
Activesync is not supported under vista, instead you get a somewhat less functional windows mobile device thingy that I personally don't like.
Ultimate edition does have some cool toys. , and the interface is shiny. I do like the media center components.
All the XP functions you depend on are in completly different spots.

Drivers were not too bad, I had one issue wth an asus cmedea onboard sound device that took some doing to get working correctly.

Programs were another issue. I had three that were issues. Diskeeper 10, Norton internet security, and avant browser. Updates for all of them were available, the diskeeper one was the most difficult to obtain.

THe installation limiter has been removed, but it looks like it has the same "call microsoft every time you reinstall" thing that XP had. I hate that thing.

The User advisory controlls thingy SUCKS. Turn it off and you will be much happier. Once that is off the flexibility returns to the OS.

I have not ran into any DRM issues yet, I'm sure I will see them eventually though.

So thats what ive noticed so far at any rate. It's just the secondary computer though. I plan on leaving it ont here for a month, then seeing how things go beore I think of the main one.

This is all from a tech support view:

The ability to use Memory Cards/Flash drives to enhance your file swap.

More powerful system roll backs with recommened dates for enhnaced processing.

For Dual Channel memory users with 1 gig or more and a onboard video card (Most notebooks) can use the extra memory to enhance your video memory.

A more advanced time sheet of errors and dates with a graph of how your computer was running.

The ability to look at a score of how your computer is up to par and tells you what you need to most upgrade. Also useful scale of if you can play a game or not.

A GREAT Network connections and a actual USEFUL network connections dianostic.

I'll puke out more later.

Edit: They got rid of the 1394 Network connections.

Also the new OS will reconize higher than 3.2 gigs of RAM on most motherboards. (Without installing screwey programs :P)

Doing router support with the new network map is a godsend. I can actually SHOW people the green lines that connect and the red lines is where it messes up. So they can't argue that.

It's a godsend, if you have a Media card reader you can just plug in your SD chip and actually get use out of it. It doesn't harm the media card or the flash drive if you rip it out when your using it and it won't harm the OS either.

It looks like a poriton of it is. I'm thinking i'm going to have to put a CF Reader in the secondary machine and go find the fastest large CF card I can find and play with it.

Same with Kao, I'm pretty sure it's Dynamic. When we where in trainging messing with it I did yank it out when it was running and it did hang up for a sec and it went right back.

A memory card is faster than a hard drive for small file transfers. No spin rate to contend with. So the theory being that for some of your more repetitive swap operations having that swap take place on the card will dramatically speed up some operations.

I would not be suprised to see people like Asus putting an integrated flash stack on their motherboards soon.

Um, yeah, AFAIK they released a service pack back in early January when it was only running on select enterprise systems (not available to public). When they have to patch the final version *before* it hits shelves, well, you know you're dealing with M$.

Personally, I wouldn't even switch to Vista for another year or so even if I had hardware that would run it. I don't even like XP - I'm running it in "classic" (2K) mode.

You should have got or be getting an e-coupon (or email voucher or ********* that you redeem on the website for your Vista upgrade. You have until end of April I believe to do it. This is how Dell is handling the upgrades.

I'm not updating until Crysis, personally. Even then, it had better live up to all those videos circulating because upgrading to an 8800 and getting a copy of Vista is not something I will take on lightly.

If not, then I'll hold out on XP until Vista SP2 just to be a ****.
