There are tons of people of darker complection that pretend to be white: Colin Powell, and Coni are other examples in politics alone.

Ture. Also Wayne Brady in entertainment. Boy, he's awfully clean.

Yeah, but he's not really all that entertaining anymore...not since the original runs of "Whose Line is it Anyway".

I have to say when I first thought about this I cringed at "articulate" well before I ever got to "clean". I"articulate/well-spoken" is the classic sterotype that is always introduced when people hear a black person speak in public, like they expect a politician to speak like a rapper or something.

It was a poorly constructed comment and, while I'm sure it was based on the same internal prejudices many people have, I find it hard to believe it was mean-spirited. Biden is an idiot, but not a racist. You can't compare that to someone like Byrd, who was in the Klan, or Thurmond, who was an outspoken opponent of the Civil Rights Movement. Nice false dilemma, though.

It doesn't have to mean "like a rapper". Maybe he just meant that Obama doesn't speak like... I dunno... President Bush.

He's working on that Perry Como tribute album.

His cover of 'tuti-fruiti' should be a smash hit.

I think he more meant that Obama didn't speak like oh..Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. You know, he's 'articulate'.

Now, that would have been enough to catch my ear (or eye, whatever). Who would have thought, an articulate and bright man running for President? Nice change of pace.

It didn't go down that way because he wasn't talking about some regular run of the mill pompous white man. He clearly intended in the way of a proud white papa praising his all grownz up black adopted brother.

RAWL! His statement is his statement, plainly read.

1.) you got the first mainstream African-American

2.) he is articulate

3.) he is bright

4.) he is clean

5.) he is a nice-looking guy

He is obviously WoWed by Obama being the first African-American to possess White Man qualities. How can you take it any other way? And if you *can* take it any other way how do explain the fact that Biden *himself* was out there apologizing?

Dude, I was making an obvious Bush joke there, not leading into a dicussion of the oratory skills of black politicans. Way to ruin it.

For the same exact reason I said of Kerry "No matter what he actually meant to say, he should just say he's sorry and that, intent aside, he said something profounded retarded". However, unlike Kerry who played the defensive for a few days, Biden was smart ehough to just say "Dumb statement. I'm sorry".

If Biden had spent the next five days saying "I'm being mischaracterized by a poorly transcribed remark", everyone would just be saying "Why won't he just own up?!?!"

Dingdingdingding!!! It's like someone complimenting a Mexican politician and saying "Well, he speaks English, he's hard-working, and he's a citizen!!" I mean, c'mon. If you're even the slightest bit saavy, you know what the applicable stereotypes are and you avoid them. The real problem here is that Biden's CoS didn't get first crack at his remarks.

I took his comment to mean that for the first time there's a potentially viable black candidate.

I mean, Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan were great women; but let's face it, neither of them had a chance in hell.

Come now, to think he'd forget Allen Keys is rather naive.

Yeah. This was pretty much the impression I got out of all of this. He took a relatively minor statement which could have *easily* been repaired with something simple like: "Gee. I meant to make a joke about Bush. I botched it and it came out sounding like I was bashing the troops. I didn't mean it that way, and I appologize to anyone I may have offended".

But instead he went on a tirade with his "I will appologize to no-one!" bit. Holy "how to make things worse" Batman!
Of course, now Biden says he's sorry, he said something dumb that he didn't mean and he makes the rounds of making nice-nice with Obama, Sharpton, Jackson, et al and we have people saying "He apologized! That PROVES he meant what he said!!"

Ooooooofff course it does Smiley: rolleyes

He could pause for a year, and it still wouldn't change every characterising adjective word being racist references not usually expected from a black man, or ever seen before from a black man. That statement is latently loaded with racism no matter how you slice or pause.

False. See above statement. But good. This is exactly the apologist hypocricy that is being exposed from Jesse Jackson, from Obama himself, and from *you people*. :P

I'm not a pubbbie either, Libertarian ftw, but I like to rip both of the mainstream sides. But voting for Biden for president isn't the issue. The issue is him resigning his Senate seat forthwith with haste. That there aren't equal fair and balanced hoopla calls for him to do so is hypocritical, and extremely damaging to the credibility of any true instances of racism that he, they, or you may choose to take up as an issue in the future.

Biden should resign his Senate seat immediately. That their are not calls for Biden to resign his Senate seat immediately destroys the credibility of the Congressional Black Caucus, Jesse Jackson, the liberal media, Borat Osama, the Democratic Party, and you people. The race card just got that much weaker. And those people just got that much more hypocritical.

I suppose requiring that every politician who gaffes must resign forthwith is one way to ensure small government, stupid as it is.
