"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."

Quote:
WASHINGTON, Jan. 31, 2007 — Senator Joe Biden, D-Del., the loquacious chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee who launched his presidential campaign today, may be experiencing an ailment not entirely unknown to him: foot in mouth disease.

Biden is taking some heat for comments he made to the New York Observer, in which he said of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., a rival for the nomination: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."

How nice it must be to fly with the friendly media on your side! How nice it must be to not be Strom Thurmand! How nice it must be to not be one of those other dirty blackies! So when's the resignation of the racist? Where's the "fair and balanced" Smiley: rolleyes criticism? Could you imagine the uproar if the "wrong" person had made these comments?

I like him. I wish there was any chance in hell of him actually winning the nomination.

Edit: Obama, not Biden.

Lol. Been busy lately. Missed this.

It'll be interesting to see just how much heat (or lack) he gets for this.

Seriously. If you still believe that the media isn't incredibly biased to the left, just watch how short the legs on this story end up being. I predict it'll have been dropped completely by next monday.

Yeah, and just watch as Fox News and the other Right-wing media outlets won't look into it all that much either.

The media is biased either way, it just depends what channel you watch and what newspaper you read. Doesn't matter anyway, your american media outlets are all a joke anyways.

It's more than an example of media bias. It's a glaring example of conscious ugly politically motivated hypocricy. This will do for the credibility of claims of racism what the Duke rape case is doing for the claims of rape victims. Don't you see the -99 Credibility hits everyone from Jesse Jackson, to the Daily Show, to the Congressional Black Caucus, to the Asylum is taking? Sometimes silence is louder than words. Bookmarked.

I don't think that Biden was attempting to insult Obama. Stop drinking the Hannity punch and think for yourself today.

If you break it down and think about it, it was a compliment, though somewhat backhanded at the general state of black people today...I mean Bill Cosby is an intelligent and articulate black man, I don't see where Obama is "storybook". Saturday morning cartoon? Maybe, but not likely.

Though I do agree that the hypocricy in the media is overwhelming at times. Just here, it's not that big of a deal.

As to Strom...you know he was a racist, right? Saying that the "country would be in a better place" had in been elected isn't a very good thing to say in this day and age. Even though I do get that it was supposed to be a compliment to the old man, it's still out of place.

Senator Byrd (D-WV) was in the Ku Klux Klan. Strom Thumond was a racist?

Like I said, could you imagine the uproar if the "wrong" person had made these comments? There would be immediate loud calls for resignation, censure, impeachment, etc. So when is the Senate going to be 49 Republicans, 50 Democrats, with **** Cheney as the tie breaker, because of this? The words speak for themselves: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."

Strom was a racist. I can't speak on the people voting for Byrd. He should rot in hell for his crimes too.

Finally, an admission that the Asylum has credibility!

I was sick last night. But since the story is on page 1 of the Tribune, I'm not into the whole "liberal media bias!" thing on it. Sorry. The Daily Show is recorded with a day's delay. I'd be really suprised to see it go unmentioned today. But, if it is, feel free to bring it up.

How long will the story's legs be? Depends on how offended the black community is. I think it was a retarded thing to say regardless of his motives and intent (and Obama and Jackson both seem to think the intent was pure even if his delivery sucked ***) just as I thought the Kerry troops thing was retarded. But, while I'm sure the Pubbies are just waiting to crucify someone and will cry long and loud if they don't get their chance, without the outrage of the community at large, it just isn't going to happen. But feel free to blame that on the media if it makes you feel better that your quarry escaped.

Incidentally, the stories leave out the "Yeah" the interviewer interjects between "African American" and "Who is...", making it seem like one long uninterrupted thought. The quote reads a lot less damningly as:
"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American, who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy..."

Liberal media bias on the part of the Observer I guess.

Wow, you're a little behind the rest of the class today. Biden was on the Daily show yesterday, joking around with John Stewart.

I sure am. Was sick last night and hit the sack early on.

So, did Stewart call him on it? Or was the "silence speaking louder than words"? I guess I'll YouTube it and find out for myself.

I'd tend to think they're not eagerly awaiting crucifying Joe Biden. The main this story is probably a non starter is that Biden has about a 1 in 90000000 chance of coming in anything but 3rd or worse in any primary or caucus.

Oh, and also, Byrd has nothing to do with the Obama comment. The only reason that the Kool-Aid drinkers are bringing him up is for a "look, him too" whine and moan.

Face it, the Republicrats suck, and have failed their country by becoming nothing more than centrist, big government, lying, oath breaking, hate mongers. They're almost as bad as the Demoncrats.

Thank God there are still some Democrats and Republicans left there, maybe they'll jump ship to parties that have the country at heart, rather than their paychecks and earmarks.

Listening to the interview segment, there is no way in hell I can take his statement to mean what the stories suggest. You can complain about the media if it makes your heart flutter but the way the sentence is being written in the stories is very poorly presented, to say the least.

Wait, are you implying that the media is taking a few words out of context from something a politician says and presenting it as news?

This must be stopped.

What I find disturbing about this thread and the above post is the use of "black man". Why can't he be just a man? I fail to understand this nations hang-ups on race.

Quote:

Shouldn't it had gone down more like "I mean, you've got a Man running for President who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."

Now, that would have been enough to catch my ear (or eye, whatever). Who would have thought, an articulate and bright man running for President? Nice change of pace.

I agree with you 100%. I use the refrence to skin color in this thread to show my point of Obama not being a storybook type person. There are tons of people of darker complection that are quite wonderful speakers, and of very high intelligence. Colin Powell, and Coni are other examples in politics alone.
