Thanks dewds.

AVG FREE

I have been using for two years now, easy to set up and run. Works 10x better then any of the crap I used to pay for. AngstyCoder approved also!

I use AVG, it's free and it does the job for me.

But I'm really no expert on these matters...

I picked up Norton Virus Scan 2007 (3 User) a couple weeks ago for $44.99 with a $45 rebate from Fry's.

Free online virus/malware scanner and removal tool. Works very well and picks up stuff other scanners don't.

Nevermind, I answered my own question about AVG free. Nothing to see here. Move along.

I use Panda Activescan as my secondary anit viral. It is webbased and therefore cannot be corrupted by the very viruses you are trying to kill.

I usea really good, free Virus scanner that you never have to buy a subscription for and blows AVG out of the water!

But I'd have to kill you if I told you which it was.

If I were you I'd just go to your local health department, they scan you for for everything for free, and give you a goodie bag of rubbers on your way out the door.

http://www.trendmicro.com

that is the one i use to fix most problems on customers computers. a lot of viruses will disable installed anti-virus software and if you try to install anti-virus software after the system is infected it may or may not work depending on the virus(es) you have.

trendmicro will catch enough of them to get a system stable again, and should get it to a point you can install AVG or AntiVir on the system to get it cleaner.

also what trendmicro can not clean, but detects it will tell you the name of it, so you can google for a manual fix.

If the pop-up I get from AVG lately is true, they will not be supporting their free version after mid February.

Next suggestion?

I had the same thing in December, just go and download the "new" free version.

Quote:
GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 18th of Feb 2007.

that just means they are getting ready to release a new vs of AVG that will not be compatible with the vs you are running. your engine must be to old and they are wanting you to upgrade to a newer engine.

you can continue with AVG or switch to Anti-Vir, both are great.

I used to use AVG, until it missed a trojan I picked up. It happened right around the time AVG started posting the notice about going totally pay (at least that's what it implied at the time, even though it turned out not to be true.)

Fortunately, I use Comcast for my cable connection and they offer free McAfee anti-virus and firewall, both full versions. If you have Comcast you may want to look into this. Updates are free for as long as you have cable internet from them.

You know, I hear the Linux penguin takes it in the *** from the BSD devil. Let's play dress-up. You wear a tux and I'll bring a pitch fork.
