Taxi (1978-1983) was (I think) made by the same people who created Cheers (1982-1993).
Here are some other shows I enjoyed in the 80s - some you may have seen before:
Barney Miller(1975-1982). Don't know if you are a fan of the show, "Firefly" and its movie, "Serenity", but this is where Ron Glass (Preacher on Firefly) started out.
Greatest American Hero - (1981-1983) Goofy show with a top 40 theme song at the time. Silly cheezy show like the Misfits of Science. Connie Selleca was in it.
Fridays (1980-1982)- a competitor to Saturday Night Live - Michael "Kramer" Richards was in the cast in his pre-Seinfeld/pre-racist days. He and Mark Blankfield were the funniest guys on the show. Also of note, Larry David was in the cast as well (Seinfeld co-creator and creator of "Curb Your Enthusiasm".
Kids in the Hall (1988-1994) - one of the best sketch comedy shows ever. You probably saw this one after you returned - if not, check them out, awesome show.
Miami Vice 1984-1989 - Epitome of 80s cool (for what it's worth) fashion, music, and cop drama.
Quincy, M.E. Before CSI, there was Quincy, M.E.! (1976-1983)
SCTV (1976-1981)- Another awesome sketch comedy show (better than Saturday Night Live at the time).
The Tracey Ullman Show (1987-1990) - Great sketch comedy show and was where The Simpsons shorts were first aired between sketches. (You might have seen this one since you came back in '87).
WKRP in Cincinnati (1978 - 1982) funny show and of course, a very hot Loni Anderson
