Any of you plan on seeing the remake that opens tomorrow? I'm generally not a fan of remakes, but this may be a good date movie.

I heard an interview with the director Dave Meyers today on the radio and this is he directorial debute for a full-length film. He's done mainly music videos and commercial. Not sure if that isn't a plus though because he basic has to prove himself with this film.

I loved the 1986 version. Rutger Hauer was freaky as the killer and that's what has turned it into a cult film. Sean Bean is supposed to be more thugish in this version. I'm not sure if that will play well to fans of the earlier version. The youngens of today will probably love it.

Rutger Hauer was way freakier in Blade Runner.

And C. Thomas Howell was in Soul Man.

I mean, c'mon.

I do think Sean Bean is a cool actor (too bad he's usually bad guy terrorists), but I'll wait and see.

This movie is supposedly utter crap. Some opinions:

HARRY KNOWLES

MORIARTY

ROTTEN TOMATOES

Blazing Saddles was a huge hit with audiences and critics alike when it was released. While still very popular, I don't know if that qualifies as a cult flick.

I just don't think it should be lumped in with an 80s psycho thriller. Tron is a good call, though.

I was referring to it as a cult film based on interviews I heard on the radio. Appearantly there is a core group of fans for the original that were trash-talking the remake.

Wikipedia wrote:
Cult film is a colloquial term for a film that has accrued a highly devoted group of fans. Often, cult movies have failed to achieve fame outside of this small group (however, there are some exceptions.) Sometimes, the group is bound to the film by a shared sense of ridicule for it, rather than artistic merit. Cult films often become the source of a thriving, obsessive, and elaborate subculture of fandom, hence the analogy to cults.

Some contend that, in rare cases, a film can be both a major studio release and a cult film, because a small, devoted following exists within the film’s larger audience (i.e., 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Matrix series, Taxi Driver and the Star Wars series.)

Blazing Saddles didn't make Wiki's list (bottom of the wiki article), but I would say it would qualify. Young Frankenstein made the list.

Hauer was a different type of freak in BR. Although I do love that movie, I prefer Hauer in The Hitcher as his better freak performance.

Damn fine actor, just the bad fortune of chosing a whole load of bad movies. But his good movies are truly good.

As for the remake of The Hitcher, can it be any worse than The Hitcher II? The one with Busey? Now that one was truly bad, unfortunately not camp bad but just plain bad.
