Fleven mentioned that he and his wife would be saving up episodes and watching them two at a time and I thought this might be a good idea seeing as how this is one of those shows that's great to watch in multiples. But alas, I found myself bored and uninspired as far as the scrapbook I need to finish in two weeks goes and ended up watching it alone since the hubby had knocked out early.

What a relief it was to see everyone back exactly where we'd left them. Octavian and Atia both looked a tad chunkier, but the premiere still had the same feel to it as the first season. Antony's antics were great, but I couldn't help but chuckle that none of it was his idea.

As fascinating as I find the show because of the scripting and acting, I find myself more intrigued by the Lucius/Pullo storyline because the main Rome storyline has of course already been spoiled by the basic high school course in history and literature while the story of these two soldiers pretty much ends after the first few episodes of the show take place.

I was very relieved that Vorenus had *not* in fact killed the children in a fit of rage as the previews had led me to believe. Of course, all that relief was worth **** considering how I feel now after that last line out of Erastus. Opinions? Was he telling the truth or just getting one last dig into Vorenus before he died? Did he sell them instead? Did someone of the conspirators hire him to take the children?

Also, Ireni? Did she marry Pullo so that she can kill him later or has she genuinely moved on given her status and slave mentality?

I don't believe his children are dead. Erastus was just a bit too cocky, and he knew Vorenus was going to kill him anyway.

As for Pullo and Ireni - I'm really hoping she's forgiven him. Not that I really like her, but he's one of my favorites. He's always been jealous of Vorenus (to a degree it seemed), so I'd like to see him happy in a relationship now.

All in all, good premiere. I might watch it again!

Hubby is watching it again now, so I'm re-watching.

Now that I see it again I think his children are definitely alive. Erastus is ranting about respect for the dead just before and then he tells Vorenus he raped and killed his children then disposed of them without proper burial? Yeah, I think he was just sticking it to him since he knew he was going to die. Question is, who hired him to do it?

I agree that Voreunus' children are alive, however, I don't think anyone hired Erastes to do it.

Erastes has had a hard-on about hurting Vorenus ever since Vorenus refused to kill a man for him early in the first season. Then there was the time Vorenus stopped Erastes' men from beating someone who owed him money in the marketplace, for which Vorenus was supposed to publicly apologize or Erastes would come for him and his family--only when Erastes did so, Ceasar was at Vorenus' house complete with all his guards, asking him to run for magistrate. After that, he couldn't lay a hand on Vorenus, because Vorenus obviously had Ceasar's favor.

So Erastes has plenty of reason to hold a grudge against Vorenus (and raping his children is the threat he made before) and when it was announced that Ceasar was dead, he realized that Vorenus had lost his protection and now would be a good time to act. But I do think it more likely he sold them into slavery or some such (not sure exactly what practices there were for enslaving free Romans at that time.) The fact that we never actually SAW the disposition of the children is very telling.

Niobi's sister is likely dead, unless adults bring in a fair price. (if they were sold)

Wasn't it Niobi's sister that told Verenus the Erastus had taken the children?

No, I am pretty sure that was Niobe's mouthy friend we see occasionally throughout the first season. I got them mixed up a lot the first time I watched the first season, but there was another woman Niobe would confide in who wasn't her sister. In fact, you see her quite a bit before you first meet Niobe's sister.

I'm pretty sure that was her sister helping prepare the body for burial. I had thought she came to live with them after her husband went missing.

I don't know how the sister's name is spelled (phonetically it's Lie-dee) but she was staying with them after her husband (Ivander?) went missing. Then when Pullo told her her husband was dead (not that he told her precisely how) she fought with Niobe and left. When Vorenus and the rest of the 13th went to Greece to fight Pompey, Lie-dee came back and she and Niobe went into the butchering business together, but I don't recall her living with them again, though I don't think it was mentioned one way or the other.

It was her helping prepare the body, but the women in the house after the children went missing wasn't her, I don't think. The voice and accent was different.

Hurray for Rome!

I can only hope that season 2 has more of Cleopatras breasts. Those were just great.

Even without looking at the face of the woman in her house, just by the dialogue I figured she was some nosy neighbor getting her stuff back. Like that lady that kept what's her face's blender in the pilot for Desperate Housewives. "I'm only taking stuff I lent"

Don't know about Cleopatra, but if you like Indira Varma (Niobe) check out Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. It's basically Bollywood soft-core starring her and Naveen Andrews (Sayid from Lost.)

Nope, but Navreen Andrews sure has--and is a lot better off for it. MUCH sexier on Lost.

Well to be fair I think it had a lot to do with the sleazy character he played. And all that eye make-up too. *shudder*

You read it here first, ladies and gentlemen.

Even before we saw what was in the cart, I looked at Mr. Ambrya and announced it was gonna be Vorenus' kids.

I just got digital cable and I'll be wasting away watching this On Demand for awhile (when it works). It's only episopes like 10 and onward but o well.
I'll say this. the guy who plays Mark Anthony certainly must have studied Richard Burton's acting in Cleopatra a LOT. hehe

one thing, Where is the hot slave girl from? The one that the cool soldier/slave guy is in love with that has a Greek name.

You mean what is her context in the series, or do you recognize the actress from someplace?

Eirene came onto the scene in the episode where the soldiers Pompey entrusted to bring the treasury gold to Greece killed his one trustworthy lackey and made off with the gold themselves. On their way out of Rome, the theives came across Eirene who was going about her chores and nabbed her.

When Vorenus and Pullo's scouting party came across the treasury wagon, travelling ahead of Ceasar's army on its march toward Rome, Eirene was tied to the back of it, and Pullo noticed her, but they were too busy engaging the soldiers who were with the wagon and she was dragged off when the oxen pulling the wagon decided to head off on their own. Pullo couldn't go back and find her for a while because he was duty bound to scout forward all the way to Rome, but after they finally got to Rome, their duty was discharged so Pullo went off to find her, and eventually discovered her still tied to the wagon, collapsed in exhaustion while the oxen were taking a rest. Pullo picked her up, then investigated the contents of the wagon (which was disguised as a grain wagon) and discovered all the treasury gold. Not realizing what it was, he took some for himself and buried the rest, and when he got back to Rome, Vorenus figured out what he had done and made him go tell Ceasar about what he had found, thus enabling Ceasar to get his hands back on the treasury gold and therefore keep Rome under control.

If you were asking about the actress herself, I have no idea...

awesome account, A.

I saw he episode lst night too.. I don't know how up to date it was.. or if it was the latest one... but the scene where Octavian wakes up and his mother and Anthony are getting ito his face about entering public life totally got my heart pumping. Reminded me of my dysfunctional familySmiley: grin

And I find Cleopatra curiously stimulating even though she looks... odd.

Yeah she does look a bit odd. Think her seeing Pullo is bad news for him at all? Does Cleopatra think she needs to ensure him silence?

That last bit with Octavian was really intense because yeah, reminded me of my family back in the day too.

hmm.. so Caesar had brown eyes. Cleopatra has brown eyes. Caesarian has big blue eyes. Smiley: confused
I know she can't be that dumb or couldn't expect other people to be Smiley: lol

another question.. in the 1st season.. did any of that take place in Celtic Gaul? I noticed a person from the last show was credited as "Gaul boss" and also a Titus Pullo is mentioned by name in the historical document Bello Galico(War in Gaul) by Ceasar.

I may need to just buy the damn 1st season...

Yes, maybe 3 or 4 episodes take place in Gaul IIRC. This is where we are introduced to Vorenus and Pullo and this is where they are mentioned historically. As I said before, this is why I find them more intriguing than the royals. We already know what happens to them.

I found myself laughing a lot last night. The scripting was just very amusing to me I guess. "I have caused the death of my wife. I have caused the death of my children. I have caused the death of Caesar. Tell me, what would you have me do?" Smiley: lol

They're starting to overdo that "Juno's cnut" and "Jupiter's cnut" thing though. I think I've heard it three times in two episodes already.

oooh
Kelvy: insert foot A into Mouth B

well still.. from what I remember you seem to have some fair features..your hair I think was a lighter shade of brown.. Caesar in this is dark complected as is Cleopatra..
althooough
Cleopatra WAS actually Macedonian.. who I think would be more fair... so she might have indeed had fair genes..
but I think it was to be made obvious that the child is not Caesar's.

My favourite line so far is:

Go get that German **** from the kitchen. (wehn Anthony demands that he get laid before getting out of bed)

Also the entire dialog between Octavian and his sister after they bump uglies.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Ah, here comes the price"
