Actually I'm not even sure he's my cousin. My uncle is about 10 years younger than me, drug addict, loser, no job, and the girl thinks it might be his.

But it was just an example of some real local front page news. And how crappy most local papers are on covering anything happening outside the local area (Which isn't that bad, cause that's why they are local news papers). One really shouldn't expect their local news to cover every international event.

My hometown (less than 15,000 people) has a global news section in their newspaper as well. There was a section in their dedicated to the happenings in Somalia.

I will e-mail the editor promptly to inform them that they are taking valuable page space away from local issues that they MUST make a priority.

You know, blowing stuff out of proportion like that only makes your arguement weaker.

He's trying to bring it to the level of yours.

edit: Providing an honest example is blowing stuff out of proportion? What did you do, just flip to a random page in your "Snappy Internet One-liners" handbook and close your eyes and point?

All I said is that of the many thousands of local newspapers, international news is not front page. New York Times is an exception. That International news is not priority of Local papers. I never said they didn't have it somewhere.

How is that absurd?

And then you turn and say that all local papers must remove all non local news from them cause it's a waste of space.

Somehow both of those are equally absurd?

I'm sorry, I just don't see how they are the same.

Some would call making an argument by placing absolute values based off limited experience on all news outlets and then trying to ignore and trivialize the numerous 'exceptions' absurd.

Numerous?

I'm willing to bet there are many more "Random Small Town Daily News" than there are "New York Times".

A handful out of thousands does not make Numerous. Papers like the New York Times are the minority.

Why should a LOCAL newspaper cover INTERNATIONAL events

UHGMM I don't know maybe because it is news and they do have an entire section dedicated to world news. and that would be the section I would expect to see it front page there.

I'm willing to bet their total circulation is far less.

Hey, I was right!

Incidentally, "small towns" don't generally publish a daily paper. It's typically a weekly or maybe twice a week.

The subtext of what's being said here, since it's apparently too subtle for some of us to figure out: ALL newspapers are primarily local papers. News magazines are the equivalent of a national newspaper, maybe.

As Joph pointed out, there certainly is a difference between a daily paper from a major market and the "Podunk Weekly Shopper" or whatever. Doesn't matter. The NYT is at heart a New York paper.

Ergo, local.

Edit: because "new" and "news" are not the same.

This was a nice effort, but I suspect it's going to take puppets - does Mr. Winky have any, by chance?

Bleh...
I swear, the rest of the world is a bunch of pansies. Back in the good old days, some country got out of line, you killed 1/5th of the population and told them to sit down, be good, or they'll loose their other 4/5th. We might have global super-powers nowadays that could wipe a country out in less time than it takes to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but they'll all impotent due to their squeemish citizens.
Want to fix the problem? Drop a few a-bombs where the action is, and then tell them the one with the most people still alive can clean up the mess.
