i was there at release for EQ1 too. it was horendous if any of you remember. crashing every other hour, emergancy patches taking the sytem down for a day at a time, then emergency patches to fix the emergancy patches. clipping, warping, half the quests didnt work.
and still, it wasnt as bad as AO at launch. OMG, anyone remember running through any of the city,s at launch? DAoC was smooth. nice launch. so was WoW. EQ2 blew chunks but was still better than EQ1 at launch.
i also did beta for a few. DAoC, EQ2, and even shadowbane. i quit doing beta. it ruined my enjoyment of the game. when you see the game in peices, and constantly involve yourself in chat that is predominatly negative that also focuses your attention on things you probably wouldnt otherwise ever notice, when it gets to launch, your not looking at the game for what it is, your inspecting it for the flaws that were thrown in your face during beta.
it leaves a very negative taste in your mouth. and that is why you mostly see negative press prior to release.
so i dont do beta anymore. i remembered why after a couple weeks of Vanguard beta. the problem with asking for imput from a bunch of powergaming geeks is you get a bunch of differant answers as to how to solve any problem. and to make it worse, the solutions you get DO NOT represent the views of the majority of gamers. who are mostly casual gamers as WoW so clearly demonstraited.
EQ1 fell prey to that mind set. if the best love it the rest will follow. blizzard showed them the errors of their ways. unfortunatly, vanguard was well on its way before WoW took the market by storm. to far into it to change directions and hope to launch a game in the nest few years.
its playable. it wont be for every one. personally, i think it is better than EQ2. but thats just me. i like the graphics better than WoW, even though WoW is more geared for my playstyle.
best of all, its new. not an expansion, not an add on, but something totally new. that alone should be good for a couple months.
