The Pursuit of HappinessFollow

So I went to see this movie yesterday, figuring if the fresh prince of Bel Air is in it, it has to be good.

It was a well made film of course, great filmography (probably not a word) and all, but the movie still gets a 3/10, because I didn't enjoy it at all.

The plot of the entire movie is that the Fresh Prince loses his wife and house because he has no money and his job sucks, so he is forced to live in a subway bathroom with his son. He then sees a quarter with Jefferson's face on it and starts to think about the Constitution's preamble, "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" He then realize he can only be happy if he makes a lot of money and owns a fancy car. So basically, he goes to get a job as a stock broker and becomes rich because he could solve a Rubik's Cube in like 25 minutes. Everyone in the theater gave a standing ovation as he moved into his huge fancy new mansion.

Great! Everyone goes home thinking, "Wow, I really should make more money, then I can be happy!"

Worst piece of capitalist shit plot I have ever encountered. The irony is not lost on me that I had to pay $9.50 to watch it. Don't go see this.

My Review of Sonicmonkeys review of The Pursuit of Happiness.

So I read this post today, figuring a review about a movie starring the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, it can't be complete sh'it.

I was wrong. I know it doesn't happen often but it does happen. I mean, using the word filmography, even after recognizing that it wasnt the right word? What an ignorant c'unt. Then the guy pretty much has a spoiler riddled synopsis that rambles on into a complaint against capitalism and then starts knocking the American dream. Where is McCarthy when you need him?

Worst forum movie review this week. Two Smiley: thumbsdown.

ahh grasshopper. you can see the sun, but still not see the light.

the movie wasnt about getting rich. the movie was about the limits we place on ourselves and accept. it was about going out and getting, instead of sitting down and accepting what you are handed.

the people that have what they want are the ones that went out and took it, in the face of all resistance, reguardless of the limitations placed on them by others. the same can be said of profssional athletes. how many kids from slums were told it was a pipe dream and they should go back to work at burger king?

the man was handed a pile of sheit. society labeled him as a looser and condemed him and his son to a life of destitute. he stood up when most cower in a corner, afraid to try.

the movie was about standing up. not about money. and it is a true story. i dont think any parent who has fallen on hared times would not identify with this character.

on the other hand, i go to movies to be entertained, not depressed. and while i am happy this one man stood up, there is a large portion of our society that can not. what about them?

depressing. skipp it unless your the type that likes real life soap operas. gimme a space ship or an army of orcs any day. i hate movies that show children being neglected or harmed for the sole purpose of tugging at your heart strings to suck money out of your pockets. kind of like the many CSI themes lately.

you want my money, entertain me. you want me to feel for others, thats what i go to church for and why i give them my money. your not gona get their money for a film about why i give it to the church. all you can get is my entertainment money, so you better entertain me.

depressing, skip it. just like scarlets web. not gona pay to be depressed.

Ah, yes. The story of a Southern Belle spider and her failed Civil War era marriage to a pig. A true American classic.

Capitolist Pigs, do you really believe your material possessions are what lead to happyness still? If the American Dream is about having the biggest and most costly possessions I guess I interpreted it wrong. I guess I'll go buy a huge SUV (hopefully hummer) and wastefully massive house to compensate for my extremely small ***** now.

The thing is, Will Smith's character could have just gotten a minimum wage job to support his family in their rather nice house, as opposed to stubbornly trying to sell bone density scanners, which he had a lot of difficulty selling and led to his poverty in the first place (they had been rather rich before hand, as the deposit for the 30 or so scanners would have been over $150,000, and S.F. 2 bedroom houses aren't cheap. even in bad areas. I did the calculations, he could have paid for rent if he had been making 7$ an hour at as low as 30 hrs/week between two parents that would mean his wife could get time off from her furious overtime and stay with her son.

Maybe I got the message wrong, but this was what I interpreted. "Make a lot of money, and you can be happy." Either way, that's not the case.

I know some people think winning the lottery is like the American Dream, well I heard some survey that about 75% of lottery winners wish they hadn't won it when asked a year later. Of course you probably have the arrogance to say that would never happen to you.

28 Apr 1997 Lottery millionaire Michael Allen is bludgeoned to death in a Lewiston, Maine motel room.

But today I can say I have never felt so miserable."

10 Oct 2004 Seattle police officers shoot California lottery millionaire Rick Camat to death in a parking lot near Qwest Field. Officers claim that Camat refused to drop his pistol, but Camat's brother claims the cops give him no instructions to do so.
2 Oct 2005 Having spent his $10 million prize in just seven years, Winnipeg lottery winner Gerald Muswagon hangs himself. Notable events in his monied spree include a high-speed chase in 2000 and a sexual assault arrest in 2002.
28 Oct 2005 Million dollar jackpot winner Christina Goodenow is arrested after Oregon police discover that she had purchased the winning ticket with a credit card stolen from her dead mother-in-law. Police searching her home discover her stash of methamphetamine, but find no trace of her first $33,500 installment.
15 Jan 2006 Bankrupt ex-lottery millionaire William "Bud" Post III dies of respiratory failure in Seneca, Pennsylvania. Post had won $16.2 million in the Pennsylvania lottery on February 24, 1988. From a 1993 interview: "Everybody dreams of winning money, but nobody realizes the nightmares that come out of the woodwork, or the problems."

Ahem, okay...

Scarlet's Web hmm? Is that a new movie about a spider on a big Georgian plantation? 'Cuz of course, every person with an ounce of education around here know's that the current movie based on one of the most incredible children's books of all time, by E.B. White, is called Charlotte's Web.

Honestly, shadow...how can you expect anyone to ever take you seriously when at every opportunity, you flaunt your ignorance like a badge? How you can have the audacity to pretend to be wiser than ANYONE (i.e. calling them "grasshopper") is beyond comprehension.

Damn...joph beat me to it.

Funny, I thought it was a fantastic movie and one of Will Smiths better roles. Oh well, it's not like opinion has become fact, at least until I am crowned Caesar by the US Congress.

Ok, since I totally missed the message of the movie, does anyone want to explain it to me, rather than make nebulous comments on my stupidity.

Really, all I see is a man born with natural talent, intelligence, and ability who has ignored them his entire life, who suddenly aspires to be something better, and becomes rich.

Who does this movie apply to? Natural born geniuses who haven't applied themselves to anything, who only care about making money. Having lived in both poverty and then moving up to the middle class, I think I can safely say money doesn't provide happiness in your life. Remember his son, who didn't mind living in a bathroom stall or getting a basketball for Christmas? He was happy just having his family, which he could have kept if Smith's character just got any kind of paying job, minimum wage or better.

Sorry if I offended any of you who's only goal in life is to make money.

Well, first of all he didn't ignore his gifts all his life. He fell on hard times after having built up a respectable career. Maybe some of that was his fault, maybe not; but the fact remains that he was middle class, if not upper middle class, when the bottom fell out and he ended up living on the street with his kid.

That in itself is a lesson: no matter how secure you think you are, most of us are a couple of paychecks off the street.

Okay. Once you hit the point where it's hard to even find a place to shower and store a clean set of clothes, it gets exponentially harder to get back up to a comfortable, secure home. Not only that, but the expectation of everyone around you is that you're where you belong and where you'll stay. It doesn't take long before you accept that as reality, as well. Call it giving up or giving in or what you like. This is where our protagonist found himself.

Then one day he had a minor epiphany. He realized that he had a choice: to stay where he was, or to make a better life for himself and his kid. He chose to fight his way back out of poverty, and once there, he chose to dedicate his time sharing his story to help others realize that same deceptively simple truth: your fate, your reality, is at your command. You don't have to accept the expectations of others. You don't have to give in to the passive slide to the bottom.

Money doesn't buy happiness, obviously. Taking control of your life is a big step toward happiness, though; and money is one tool that makes it possible.

That help, at all?

The art of subtext is lost on most people, Samira. Might as well give it up as a lost cause.

I know whereof I speak. A family member once told me Man of La Mancha was about nothing more than a guy who's crazy and a woman who gets herself raped.
