...or whatever the most hip curse word is right now.
Copy of a pm to old Alla, hope he reads his mail. Italicised for manipulative emotional affect.
Dear Allakhazam,
Salutations and hello. I realise you likely receive several private messages on various matters and that reading through them is a chore, but hopefully I will not take up too much of your time and hopefully you will find this letter a little less than boring.
You may or may not be aware of an issue that occurred between an administrator and a subscriber recently. This issue itself is not important and has already been dealt with properly by the administrator. However it is made me aware of the circumstances and restrictions surrounding employment as an administrator. Namely the inability to respond in a conventional manner to agitation.
I am young and have little work experience, but I have worked part time at Hallmark retailer. We were required to offer customers deals we knew annoyed them and push merchandise we knew they did not want. We were also completely helpless to shoplifters. If you decided to walk out of the store with five hundred dollars worth of merchandise (and that is not hard to do, Hallmark cards are bloody overpriced!) I could do little more than ask to see your recipe as you exited the doors. Now I had assumed that such limitations and rules applied to persons of all occupations, and consequently Allakhazam employees as well, but it was not until this most recent issue that it was made opaque just what some of those limitations were.
I would wish that administrators have just a little more of the freedom that subscribers and regular posters have.
Most of the older community know the administrators well. Some of us have seen friends and long time posters become administrators. I don't see any administrator as some paid employee of Allakhazam there to simply provide me with a service. To me they are simply regular posters who help keep order, and just so happen to have the omnipotent power of bannanation should I step out of line. Most of the admins I like and believe to be generally good people. I would like to be able to think of them less like employees and more like “regulars.â€
I think Tyrandor should be able to tell me why each and everyone one of the good points I list about FFXI are utter crap. Azuarc should be able to correct me critically on anything I ever get wrong about WoW. Kaolian should be able to use whatever curse word has become the new fad to insult me should I provoke him. Pikko should be able to... well she's too sweet to do anything mean. And I strongly encourage Darqflame to call me all the dirty names she can think of (oh I've been a bad, bad poster haven't I)?
I realise that the entire community is not all of the same mindset and that there are those subscribers who would turn off auto-renew because they could not stand for a critical comment or a due harsh word. I also realise that Allakhazam is a business and depends on these subscriptions in addition to advertising revenue. At the time of sending this message my status will be, and has been for some time recently, a non-subscriber. As a college student money and budgeting has been a bit tight and I have found it somewhat hard to chip in to the site that has given me so much. But as an incentive to allow a little more leniency with administrators and create a more casual milieu I intended to resubscribe to Allakhazam for another year. There is some profit to be had in laxness.
I hope the new year finds you well.
Sincerely,
A Reclaimed Subscriber
