Anyone play the new (such as it is after a year) version of Sid Meiers' "Pirates!" who had played the old 1988 version? Is it still the same good times? The game slipped off my radar until I stumbled over a review for it last night and it made me consider getting it. But I'm basing that as much off the nostalgia factor as I am based on the modern version itself. I'd hate to get it and immediately feel like I had ruined some good memories.

I was 8 in 1988 so I've never personally played "Pirates!"

The Transformers just aren't the same today, ya dig? Nostalgia sucks, nothing is ever as good as it once was.

I'd say Sid Meiers' Civ II was a marked improvement over his vastly enjoyable Civilization. I'm asking if he did the same with Pirates! or if he bell-and-whistled the original flavor out of it.

Arrrr! I played the original Pirates! back then on my Amstrad 6128. Loved it. I still remember sacking Cartagena when both the silver train AND the treasure fleet were in town. ^^

I also played Pirates Gold years later on a Atari ST.

And I bought the new version the day it was released. I liked the game, played it quite thorougly. Of course, it doesn't faszinate me like the original game, but then I've grown a bit older, too... ;)

There are a couple of features (like the "sneaking into town" mini-game) that were IMHO not that well implemented, and I missed the old "Sail on the horizon"->"looks like a War Galleon"->"Oh no! It's the infamous Pirate-Hunter, Duke..."-moments.

OTOH I liked the new land combat system and (*grins*) the dancing mini-game.

The sound and grafics are very well done and feature a distinctive style that gives the whole game a great atmosphere of adventure, comedy and over-the top action.

IMO it's a fun game and well worth its price, especially if you're an old Pirates!-fan.

What I really liked about it was the fact that you could play it for an hour or so, have a great time and feel like you've accomplished something. Many games nowadays force you to spend large amounts of time with them, so Pirates! for me was an excellent game to relax to after a hard day.

There's a glowing review over at Gamespot.com, you can read it here:

I also played the old Pirates as well as this new version and in my opinion, they've done an excellent job with the new version. Like the poster above me stated, the sound and graphics are very good. I like the land battles much more in the new version. I can't remember how hard the dueling was in the original, but in this version it's way too easy unfortunately.

Definitely recommended.

Thinking about Pirates reminds me of another of my favorite games from back then. Wings was a game where you played through the daily life of a pilot in WWI. I loved that game but just can't seem to find a copy of it anywhere. Anyone play that one?

To be honest, the only reason I picked up the new copy of Pirates was because the old version was included. I tried the new version, fully expecting to be disappointed but ended up being quite happy with it.

Dueling in the original was easy as well. I commonly would lead a "suicide" assault on a fort knowing that, once inside, I would win the duel (and thus, the battle) despite me having 13 men left to the fort's 490.

Yes.

It is the exact same game as the C64 version (at least) with the added improvments that you would expect.
definatly a Smiley: thumbsup

Although one thing I will say... it does not seems as "large" as the older one.... but maybe because my geographical knowlwdge of the Carribean was not too sharp back then.

It's a fun game to mess around with though. Easy to pick up. Easy to put down.

Oh yeah. You can't take a fort with your ship anymore. YOu can attack it and damage it.. but you cannot engage it.

There is also a bit more battle strategy with land battles in this too.

Time passes much faster while sailing in this one. Ergo, one doesn't spend as much time doing it, which I don't miss. Crew morale is still key, so if you ***** around sailing off in random directions, they will revolt (unless you are packing enough money...).

I love the new one, and played it through, and it was light and fun. Instead of playing the old version, when I wanted a deeper game (which really primitive graphics) I went to World of Pirates. Actually back to WoP since I played in beta. Although it is an MMO, there is no monthly fee. And despite having unlimited PvP - which is basically an immeasurably bad idea - it is easy to avoid griefers - mostly because the world is so sparsely populated. My latency was way too long to even attempt PvP and I have a good connection. The server is in Germany (I think - the game is definately German - I think someone said the server was in England however I cannot recall how totally unreliable that was).

Although an avid gamer since well before '88, I never played it the first time. I bought it last year and really didn't get into it. It's been collecting dust ever since. Send me a PM and I'll mail you my copy.

Because of this thread I dug out my old Panasonic Laser Disc player with the Sega gaming module and the only 2 games I still have for it: Pirates Gold and Primal Rage*. Nostalgia rocks.

*anyone else spend more time eating your worshipers than fighting your opponent when you played Primal Rage?
