I'm thinking it might be the [:generic computer hardware part:].

I do laptop repairs at my college. Usually, when a computer crashes like that, the motherboard is dying. Other times, it's something completely different. My specialty is with laptops though; I've never done repairs on a desktop.

You don't say. So when it's not the motherboard it's something different? Smiley: rolleyes

Shut it off, unplug it, open it, take the video card out, put it back in, close it, plug it back in, turn it on.

If you have onboard video you're hosed.

Good luck.

this would prolly be like someone telling me to change my own fuel pump in my car or something
(I can barely change my own oil)

We had issues with Mac logic boards for a while, harddrive could be dead (though not in this case), could be video card (as is suspected with this one), etc. I was offering a suggestion, man, no need to jump on my case for it.

Closer to pumping your own gas. It's really not very complicated.

You have no idea what you're talking about, it's ok. The mac part explains it really.

for a vid card.... maybe changing alternator would be a better analogy...

No! It's like changing a tire, only you put the same tire back on. In high heels.

Defragging would be like washing your car. This is like taking out the carberator.

This is like taking out the carberator.

It so isn't. It's about 1/2 as hard as changing a battery.

Tare

I've checked on various Tech-Web resources and they all concur that your solution is likely to elude you until you post pics of your bewbs.

Always happy to help.

crashed during EQ2 is probably hosed video card driver, possibly directx though that happens less frequintly with 10. Could be heat, though if the graphics card was hosed it would most likely just not show anything on the screen. Can you go to Start:run and type in dxdiag, then go to the display tab and post what type of graphics card we are dealing with here? i'd hate to tell you to try some things that usually work on an nvidia card only to find out its an ATI somethingorether. Definitly also try puling and reseating the card like Smash suggested. When you have the case open also check for stopped fans and loose secondary power connectors on the video card.

once you have done that, i'd reinstall the video card driver, then directx 10 (october 2006 version) and if that still doesn't do the trick, try a windows XP reinstall over the top of your existing installation (no format, just a repair install)

Thanks Kao. We took out the vid card and put it back and it made no difference. We are going to swap out the video cards in our computers to see if it is a vid card problem. If not, we'll try some of the other things you mentioned. It's an Nvidia card...6600 or something. I can't remember (and that comp is shut down at present).

Ok, good. that drastically simplifies troubleshooting. Definitly reinstall driver before you swap cards. it's a universal driver so it should work with either card with no reinstalling assuming they are both nvidia cards.

The other stuff is plan b

Ok, reinstalled driver and still have the same problem. Grainy desktop, black, pixelated box around mouse cursor and running EQ2 looks awful. Lots of white dots all over the screen.

Poor sick 'puter.

It didn't get stuck on 256 color mode in the driver settings did it?

Chances are the card is partially cooked.

it would be worth swapping the cards briefly to confirm that too.

How many fans do you have in your computer case at the moment, and where are they located? Also, is your computer up against any desk shelfs that might be restricting airflow?
