My computer is sick. Smiley: frown

I am not sure why but it crashed on its own today. I had been running EQ2, and it was running great, but I went afk for 15 mins or so and when I came back the computer was off. Like, it had shut itself down. So, I started it up again and noticed that I get all these blips and small dots of light on the start up screen. I got an error message asking me if wanted to start windows normally or in slave mode. When I logged on I noticed the desktop looks grainy and all the icons have a pixelated box around them. My mouse cursor has a black pixelated box around it too.

Anyone ever heard of this? Know what it is? I'd appreciate any advice.

I'm not sure if this will help, but the other day mine was giving me grief and I shut it off, then unplugged it from the wall and let it chill for a bit, and it came up fine.

I'm thinking it might be the motherboard. What kind of computer do you have?

What gave it away?

I'm thinking it might be the [:generic computer hardware part:].

I do laptop repairs at my college. Usually, when a computer crashes like that, the motherboard is dying. Other times, it's something completely different. My specialty is with laptops though; I've never done repairs on a desktop.

1- you mean Safe Mode!
2- That's how Safe Mode is supposed to look, well minus the random blips and dots
3- desktop or laptop?
4- Does it do the "boot up normally or not" every time now?

Desktop.

I got the screen asking me if wanted to start windows normally and I selected it. No change. It'll boot up, but I still have the box around my cursor and the grainy visual. Isn't it supposed to say it's in safe mode somewhere??

Corrupted registry maybe? <gulp>

Not sure how helpful this is, but I think the problem is that there's something wrong with your computer.

And no, I don't get asked that everytime I reboot. Normally windows just starts and it looks like this. I can get to the screen by pressing F8 but it doesn't seem to want to start normally.

Definatly Video.

sounds like overheated, died, and shut down the PC.
Question is whether or not you have an actual Video Card or built in Video.

Either way. I say Video. Smiley: thumbsup

yeah. try just drivers first as Samira suggests below.

Download the latest video drivers for your card? They do get corrupted sometimes.

Hrm, upstaged again. Curses!

Anyway, if updating the drivers doesn't help, it's gotta be hardware. Whether that's going to be the card, the monitor, the power supply or the mother board is really kinda hard to diagnose over a message board.

Is there a computer repair shop close by? Time to take 'er in, I think.

Yeah, if you're lucky and it's a software problem, I'd try that first too

Reinstall. If you need to find out waht kind of video you have go to
START >
RUN >
type DXDIAG >
go to the Display section and it tells you there.
THEN
go to the website of that company and find Drivers.

download and reinstall. see waht happens.
